to apply for the job

We are now looking for an independent specialist or consultant surgeon in spine surgery who wishes to combine advanced clinical practice with the opportunity to influence, develop, and contribute long-term to spine care within Region Östergötland. The position involves working with both emergency and elective spine surgery, as well as participating in the regional on-call spine service.

Here, you will work in an academic environment with a regional mandate, strong collegiality, and excellent conditions for clinical development, research, and education.

Our Offer

The Centre for Surgery, Orthopaedics and Cancer Care (CKOC) provides healthcare, research, and education within orthopaedics, surgery, urology, oncology, haematology, and pulmonology in Östergötland and within the South East Sweden Healthcare Region.

The Department of Orthopaedics at Linköping University Hospital is a large and well-established unit with approximately 150 employees. The department includes a ward with a teaching unit, outpatient clinic, and rehabilitation unit, providing both emergency and planned orthopaedic care. In addition to basic orthopaedics, the department's specialist areas include spine surgery, tumour surgery, paediatric orthopaedics, and upper and lower extremity surgery, with the mandate to treat patients from the entire South East Sweden Healthcare Region.

As a spine surgeon here, you are offered:

  • a broad clinical role within both emergency and elective spine surgery
  • work in a university healthcare unit with a strong tradition of research and education
  • the opportunity to influence and further develop spine care on a regional level
  • continuous competence development and the possibility of further subspecialization
  • excellent conditions for combining clinical work with research and education

Job Description

As a specialist or consultant surgeon in the spine section, you work in both outpatient and ward activities. The work is interprofessional and team-based, with established collaborations and networks with other specialties as well as regular multidisciplinary conferences.

On-call duties are included in the position. Following the introduction of the acute doctor system, the department no longer has primary on-call shifts. Instead, an intermediate on-call shift is staffed, and as part of the university hospital's trauma care, an orthopaedic on-call service and a separate spine on-call line are staffed 24/7.

As part of the spine on-call service, you provide support to healthcare providers throughout the South East Sweden Healthcare Region.

Spine care at the University Hospital is organized such that the Neurosurgery Department handles cervical spines, while the Orthopaedic Department's spine surgeons are responsible for thoracic and lumbar spine injuries.

Teaching medical students is a natural and important part of the job. As a university healthcare unit, we prioritize research, with active research in almost all our profile areas. There is an opportunity for doctoral studies with supervision at the department, as well as the possibility to continue researching if you are already a PhD.

Work Group

The group is undergoing an ongoing generational shift, where several senior colleagues work part-time or are approaching retirement, while younger colleagues focusing on spine surgery are being established.

This creates good opportunities for you as a specialist or consultant to take a clear and long-term role in the operations – clinically, strategically, and as a mentor and knowledge resource.

About You

We are looking for you who are a specialist or consultant surgeon in orthopaedics or neurosurgery and who is independent in spine surgery. Experience from related areas is meritorious.

You have an interest in education and research and are happy to act as a support and knowledge resource for colleagues and other professions. The role includes participation in the department's spine on-call line and some administrative work. You may also hold trust-based positions and work actively within research and education.

As a person, you are sensitive, clear in your communication, and have an easy time collaborating. You are happy to share your knowledge and actively contribute to a good work climate. You have a positive attitude, see opportunities in change, and take responsibility for your work with engagement and a holistic perspective.

The work involves continuous dialogue with patients, relatives, colleagues, and other units, which is why very good knowledge of the Swedish language, both spoken and written, is a requirement.

Application and Employment

The application should include a completed and filled-out merit summary for doctors, which you can find here (#). This must be verified. Do not forget to also attach a copy of your degree certificate or license.

Before employment in a patient-facing role within Region Östergötland, you will be asked to fill out a health declaration.

We warmly welcome your application! If you need help registering in the system, contact Customer Service Support and Service, 010-103 60 00, during office hours.

To staffing, mediation, and recruitment agencies and to you who are a salesperson:

We kindly but firmly decline direct contact with staffing, mediation, and recruitment agencies as well as other external actors and sellers of further job advertisements. Region Östergötland has procured agreements.
