Become a Foster Home?

An Important Mission

Becoming a foster home is an opportunity to make a difference for children who need it most. There are several reasons why a child may need to live in a home other than their own. This can be due to parents failing to provide adequate care, adverse circumstances such as violence or substance abuse, the child's own behavior, or the child being unaccompanied and arriving in Sweden without parents. There are different types of foster homes. If the foster home already has a relationship with the child being placed, such as a relative or close friend, it is called a network home. When a child is placed in a foster home, the starting point is that the child will be reunited with their parents as soon as the goal of the intervention is achieved. However, sometimes reunification is not the best option for the child. The length of time a child needs to live in a foster home varies from a single day to their entire upbringing.

We are looking for:

  • Secure adults who want to make a difference for a child
  • Homes that have both practical and emotional space to take care of a child
  • Couples and single individuals

Being a Foster Home Means:

As a foster home, your task is to provide the child with daily care, a secure environment, and a good upbringing. You will work closely with the social services in your municipality to ensure the child's needs are met. Your role may include helping the child with school, ensuring the child receives healthcare, supporting the child in maintaining contact with family and friends, cooperating with the child's parents, and informing social services about the child's well-being.

What is Required to Become a Foster Home?

The social services in your municipality will investigate you and your family's conditions for receiving a child in your home. The investigation includes interviews, home visits, and reference checks. If you and your family are deemed suitable as foster homes, a matching process remains. The municipality will then look at whether you have the conditions to care for the specific child that social services needs to place.

The social services in your municipality will offer you the training you need when you become a foster home. When the child is placed, Social Services will also provide advice, support, and other assistance you need based on your assignment. As a foster home, you receive financial compensation to cover costs for the child and a fixed fee for the assignment itself.

We Offer:

  • Compensation according to SKR circulars
  • Ongoing advice, support, and supervision
  • Training, including "A Home to Grow In"
