Sweden's most beautiful workplace is looking for a

Shipping Inspector / Naval Architect

Technical Unit, an important part of the Swedish Transport Administration's fleet

The Technical Unit is responsible for approximately 100 vessels within the Swedish Transport Administration, including fairway maintenance vessels, hydrographic survey vessels, icebreakers, and pilot boats. The unit also holds technical responsibility for SLU's research vessel Svea. We currently have thirteen employees within the unit, and the plan is to expand the team, which is why we are now looking for new colleagues. The Swedish Transport Administration and the Technical Unit have an exciting future ahead with many new constructions; for example, we are reviewing the fleet for fairway maintenance, pilot transport, hydrographic surveying, and icebreaking. This has already generated a couple of new construction projects, and several more are planned for the future.

Working as a Shipping Inspector at the Swedish Transport Administration Fleet

Your main tasks will revolve around our process of developing and maintaining vessels. You will conduct investigations, both technical and operational, to support strategic decisions regarding the adaptation and dimensioning of our fleet. You will define requirements, specify, and lead projects, or be part of a project team. In the long term, you may be assigned responsibility for a number of vessels, where you, together with the master, technical manager, and operations manager, will plan and budget for class surveys, maintenance efforts, and vessel upgrades. The role offers a broad and varied workday with good opportunities for development within all vessel systems. The work involves close collaboration with other shipping inspectors at the Swedish Transport Administration, where your background as a naval architect provides ship technical expertise for all vessels in the fleet. Continuous contact with other stakeholders, both internal and external, is a key part of the position. The role involves travel, primarily within Sweden but also internationally.

Who are you?

We are looking for you who meet the following requirements:

  • Degree in Naval Architecture, or other education and experience that we consider equivalent
  • Experience with vessel construction and underlying investigations
  • Experience in design and calculation work related to vessels, their equipment, and systems
  • Experience with CAD drawings as well as calculation and design programs
  • Experience and knowledge of vessels and their equipment
  • Experience in investigative work for strategic decision-making
  • Fluent in speaking, reading, and writing both Swedish and English, including technical documentation
  • Hold a valid driver's license (Category B)

The following are considered meritorious:

  • Experience from new construction and project management regarding vessels
  • Experience and knowledge of smaller vessels and their equipment
  • Experience and proficiency in Autodesk and Autoship software groups, or equivalent
  • Knowledge of and experience working according to LOU (Public Procurement Act)
  • Experience working with ILS (Integrated Logistics Support)

We will place great emphasis on your personal qualities. The role of shipping inspector requires you to make independent decisions, so you must be proactive and self-initiating. You are communicative and find it easy to collaborate and build professional relationships. Internal and external collaboration requires not only good communication skills but also the ability to maintain a holistic perspective on operations as well as control over vessel assets. Strategic and analytical qualities are also success factors for performing the role with good results.

We have high demands on our employees' awareness of security and confidentiality. The position may require Swedish citizenship. A security clearance with register check may be conducted before an employment offer is made.
