Örebro University is seeking two doctoral students for a research-level education leading to a PhD in Media and Communication Studies at the Department of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences, with studies commencing in Autumn Term 2026.
Research Focus Areas in the Subject
Research in Media and Communication Studies at Örebro University is organized within three focus areas: Discourse, Communication and Media (DCM), Film and Media (FM), and Strategic Communication (SCOM). The research spans a wide breadth but is united by an interdisciplinary and critical approach. Through a diversity of theories and methods, various types of communicative and mediated practices and phenomena are explored in both local and global contexts. The forms and conditions of mediated communication and its significance for societal change are central questions. The subject comprises an international mix of researchers and doctoral students, which enriches perspectives and approaches. Collaboration with other researchers and environments is an important part of the activity, as are collaborations with organizations and institutions outside academia.
More information about the three research focus areas can be found here: https://www.oru.se/forskning/forskningsamnen/medie--och-kommunikationsvetenskap/ (https://www.oru.se/forskning/forskningsamnen/medie--och-kommunikationsvetenskap/)
Priority Research Areas for Application
The applicants' planned dissertation projects should relate to one of the three research areas identified below. It is therefore of central importance that the project description attached to the application clearly addresses how the dissertation project can contribute to the development of one of the following areas:
- DCM: Food and Health
- FM: Use of Audiovisual Media in Philosophy, Theory, and Science
- SCOM: Public Strategic Communication in Times of Risk and Change

The Education and Employment
The doctoral education comprises 240 higher education credits and consists of courses and an independent research project presented in a doctoral thesis. The education corresponds to four years of full-time study and concludes with a PhD.
Those admitted to the education are assigned a main supervisor and at least one assistant supervisor.
Our ambition is that your research-level education should be stimulating and feel meaningful from the start all the way to your PhD. A good introduction as a doctoral student facilitates the start of your studies and gives you a solid foundation on which to build your doctoral education. As a doctoral student at Örebro University, you are offered a specially adapted seminar series covering everything from educational regulations and career development to support in your study situation and doctoral student networking.
A full-time doctoral employment is attached to the study place during the period of study. You may also be expected to perform teaching or administrative duties equivalent to a maximum of 20% of full-time work. Such commitments will, in that case, extend the four-year study period by a corresponding amount.
