Defence Music is the Swedish Armed Forces' function for Swedish military music. Defence Music will celebrate its 500th anniversary in 2026 and has played a significant role in the Swedish Armed Forces and Swedish musical life throughout the centuries.
The Swedish Armed Forces have 28 military bands, consisting of the permanent bands of Defence Music: the Army Band, the Life Guards Dragon Band, the Navy Band, and the 25 bands of the Home Guard combat force. The Wartime Organization of the Swedish Armed Forces Field Musicians is part of Defence Music. The contract bands, the Air Force Band and the Gotland Band, are engaged continuously for musical assignments.
Each year, Defence Music performs over 1,300 musical assignments through participation in state ceremonies, unit performances, public concerts, and tours - nationally and internationally, primarily within the alliance.
The Army Band
The Army Band is a military band for parade and ceremonial activities, as well as a symphonic wind orchestra for concert activities in various genres with varying focus. The band, consisting of 53 musicians, is located in Häggvik, Sollentuna. Collaboration takes place with the other military bands.
Main Responsibilities
- Marching music in ceremonies, parades, and figurative displays
- Participate in concerts in orchestras and ensembles
- Participate in record recordings and live broadcasts
Other duties include activities that can promote the band's operations, such as participating in working and project groups within Defence Music.
Working Conditions
- The work takes place in several locations with irregular working hours, and in varying conditions and environments, both indoors and outdoors, in Sweden and abroad
- Appearances are made in uniform
Qualifications
- Musical education from a university or equivalent competence
- Very good physical condition for marching music
Merits
- Completed conscription/basic military training
- Category B driver's license

Employment
This advertisement concerns a permanent position with a six-month probationary period. Start date by agreement.
Individual salary setting applies. Applicants must be Swedish citizens. Approved security clearance with register check is a requirement for employment.
Employees within the Swedish Armed Forces are offered three hours of physical training per week during working hours. Good training facilities are available at and around the band's premises in Sollentuna.

The Life Guards is one of the Swedish Armed Forces' largest units with origins dating back to 1521. We train tomorrow's soldiers, as well as military police and personnel who will conduct international operations. We guard the royal castles, we have security and ground combat units. We are also responsible for preserving and developing Swedish military music tradition. Our headquarters is in Kungsängen outside Stockholm, but we are also located in Sollentuna, central Stockholm, Uppsala, Gothenburg, and Karlskrona.
