The Functional Unit

The Functional Unit (FunkE) consists of officers and civilian specialists, including doctors and nurses. FunkE comprises two departments: the Provider Department and the Development Department. Our mission is to develop and support combat units and the Armed Forces Health Service with guidelines for safe and secure healthcare, where preventive work plays a key role. FunkE also conducts development and supply of medical materials and pharmaceuticals, as well as research within the field of Defence Medicine.

Main Responsibilities

As a psychiatrist at the Centre for Defence Medicine, you will have varied tasks, including contributing to investigations and personnel cases within the organization via, for example, the Armed Forces Health Service or other authorities. You will lecture on psychiatry within the authority and externally when needed. You will provide training on psychiatry and mental illness in a military context. Clinical assessments may occur occasionally. The role also involves participating in the design, development, and delivery of the defence psychiatry course starting in autumn 2026. Part of the responsibilities include supporting and collaborating with the Chief Psychiatrist of the Armed Forces on policy issues and missions related to defence psychiatry. You will also support the Chief Psychiatrist by visiting units to create a holistic view of current and future needs for psychiatry within the armed forces. All work is conducted in accordance with the Health and Medical Services Act.

REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications

  • Licensed physician with specialist training in adult psychiatry.
  • Completed Specialized Postgraduate Medical Education (ST).
  • Good ability to express yourself in speech and writing in Swedish and English.
  • Extensive experience working with the Office package.
  • Category B driver's license.

Personal Attributes

We are looking for someone who is loyal, analytical, and has a good ability to work both independently and in a team. You must have a solid scientific background and an interest in psychiatry in socially beneficial and security-related contexts. You need to be able to work proactively. In your role as a defence psychiatrist, it is also important that you have the ability to switch between assignments with short delivery times and slower processes. It is important that you want to influence the development of Swedish defence psychiatry at the unit level, local level, and partly at the national level. You need to have a good ability to collaborate with other professional groups, authorities, and organizations. Great importance will be attached to personal suitability.

MERITORIOUS QUALIFICATIONS

  • Clinical experience equivalent to at least 2 years of professional practice after completing Specialized Postgraduate Medical Education (ST).
  • Doctoral degree in psychiatry or a related field.
  • Understanding of authority operations.
  • Experience in research and knowledge in assessing scientific reports.
  • Previous service in the Swedish Armed Forces, especially military overseas service.
  • Officer's Degree.

FömedC consists of a leadership with staff, the Swedish Armed Forces Combat School for Defence Medicine (FSS), the Functional Unit (FunkE), and the Hospital Battalion (Sjhbat).
