About the Swedish Prison and Probation Service

The Swedish Prison and Probation Service is growing – we are building new facilities, renovating, and expanding, and we are now looking for more employees. Our most important goal is to reduce recidivism – to break the vicious cycle. If we succeed, society will become safer and more secure for everyone. We are the agency responsible for prisons, probation, remand prisons, and client transport.

Job Description

As a prison officer, you are part of a team where you have daily contact with the clients.

Working at a remand prison involves a focus on care and security and is a job with clear routines. Some people are held in pre-trial detention for long periods and only meet their lawyer and the staff at the remand prison. This places special demands on you as a prison officer.

The work also includes transport and security during, for example, court hearings and hospital visits.

Working as a prison officer means that you can make a difference for other people and contribute to a better society. To thrive and succeed in your assignment, it is important that you share the Swedish Prison and Probation Service's basic values regarding a humanistic view of humanity, respect for the individual, and the belief that humans are capable of development.

Qualifications

Your personal qualities are important. As a prison officer, you need to be secure, stable, have good self-awareness, sound judgment, and integrity. Together with your colleagues, you drive the operations, so you need to have good teamwork skills and be clear in your communication. You must be able to act physically when required.

For us, it is important that you share the Swedish Prison and Probation Service's basic values regarding a humanistic view of humanity, respect for the individual, and the belief in human will and ability to develop. You are also aware of and understand how background, culture, and group affiliation affect yourself and others. Furthermore, you are expected to contribute through your attitude to ensuring that everyone is treated equally. We place great emphasis on personal suitability.

We are looking for someone who has:

  • Completed upper secondary education or other education combined with work experience that the Swedish Prison and Probation Service deems relevant
  • Work experience, including seasonal work, hourly employment, or self-employment. Internships and volunteer work are not equivalent to employment
  • Experience of working within the Swedish Prison and Probation Service
  • Good knowledge of the Swedish language, both spoken and written
  • Good computer skills
  • Category B driver's license and driving experience

The following are also meritorious:

  • Work experience from the prison service, security work, social care, psychiatry, or healthcare and social care
  • Knowledge in relevant areas, such as behavioral science, criminology, psychiatry, law, and conflict management
  • Language skills in languages other than Swedish
