The Department of Peace and Conflict Research was founded in 1971 with the aim of conducting research and offering education in the field of peace and conflict studies. The department is today a young, dynamic, and international workplace with approximately 90 employees and around 1,000 students from all over the world. Courses are offered within undergraduate and master's programs, and we also have a doctoral program. More about the department's activities can be found at www.pcr.uu.se (http://www.pcr.uu.se).

The Project
The project "Why evictions turn violent: The politics of growing cities" (Project Leader: Emma Elfversson) started in January 2026 with funding from the Swedish Research Council and will run until 2029. The project combines quantitative analyses of data on forced evictions with qualitative in-depth studies of strategically selected cases in Ethiopia and Kenya, two countries where evictions have been common but where the dynamics of violence vary. More information about the project can be found here: why-evictions-turn-violent-the-politics-of-growing-cities (http://why-evictions-turn-violent-the-politics-of-growing-cities).

The department and the project are now seeking 2 research assistants for a 6-month full-time employment, starting September 1, 2026, or by agreement.

Responsibilities
The tasks consist mainly of data collection. More specifically, the two research assistants will be responsible for collecting new, detailed data on eviction dynamics in ten large and medium-sized cities in Kenya and Ethiopia, based on secondary sources. The employment may also include ongoing administrative/project management tasks, assistance at workshops, and various writing assignments. The research assistants will report to the project leader and collaborate closely with each other, as well as with other participating researchers in the project. The position is full-time and located on-site in Uppsala.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Good knowledge of peace and conflict research, development studies, or another area relevant to the project
  • Basic computer skills, including experience with Excel
  • Very good command of English (spoken and written)
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team
  • Accuracy and precision, analytical and problem-solving skills, and good teamwork abilities.

Other Qualifications

  • Fluent (or advanced) knowledge of Amharic or another major Ethiopian language and/or Swahili is highly meritorious, as the data collection will partly be based on secondary sources in local languages in the studied cities. Please describe your language skills clearly in your application.
  • Master's level studies in peace and conflict research or another discipline relevant to the project are also highly meritorious, as is previous experience with data collection (coding), especially conflict-related data.
  • Knowledge of GIS analysis and/or experience with statistical analysis software such as R is also meritorious. Previous experience working in or conducting research on Ethiopia and/or Kenya is meritorious.

Application: Answer the two mandatory questions, attach a CV (including a clear description of your language skills), and include a relevant writing sample (e.g., thesis) in your application.

About the Position: The position is: fixed-term (6 months). The extent is: full-time/100%. Start date: September 1, 2026, or by agreement (but no later than October 1). Location: Uppsala.
