Department of Geriatrics, Rehabilitation and Pain Centre

We are Akademiska Sjukhuset – one of Sweden's leading university hospitals. As a county hospital and provider of highly specialized care, we offer healthcare to two million people in Central Sweden. Here, something is always happening – a new life is born, a grandmother undergoes surgery, a colleague is hailed as a hero. With us, you will experience both tough trials and fantastic events, in a strong community with colleagues. We welcome your application!

Are you interested in working with elderly people and complex nursing care? At the same time, do you enjoy the challenge of a variety of different tasks? If so, you will thrive with us in the geriatrics department.

Our Operations

On the geriatric acute care ward 30A, the focus is on the elderly, frail patient. We provide medical acute care with a rehabilitative approach for elderly patients with varying care needs. The acute care is carried out based on a clear structure specifically adapted for the elderly patient and their needs. We are innovative together and constantly work on improvements to provide the best possible care for our patients and to improve the working environment for our staff/colleagues.

Within geriatric care, teamwork is central; both the collaboration of the multiprofessional team and the patient's participation are important parts of the care. As a nursing assistant on 30A, you constantly collaborate with others, thereby gaining broad knowledge in different areas and a holistic view of the patient with various needs. With our 24 care beds and many professional categories collaborating, there are always many people on site to support and learn from. The team consists of you as a nursing assistant and nurse, doctors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and as needed, pharmacists, social workers, dietitians, and speech therapists.

As a new employee in geriatrics, there is great scope for development and learning through structured introduction and experienced colleagues.

Your Role

The work of a nursing assistant primarily involves working closely with the patient. As a nursing assistant, you should be able to contribute to meeting the patient's individual care needs. Together with the nurse, you are responsible for providing patient-safe care by assessing risks for pressure ulcers, falls, malnutrition, etc. Together with the team, you implement measures and evaluate them to minimize the risk of care injuries.

In geriatrics, you as a nursing assistant gain a broad knowledge base, as our patients often have complex care needs. You combine nursing work with other tasks such as documenting in the medical record system, NEWS checks, venous blood sampling, catheter management and insertion, wound dressing changes, and connecting tube feeding, etc.

Experienced nursing assistants who have completed the steps in the ward's competency model may also be delegated tasks such as PICC line insertion and taking blood cultures.

Your Qualifications

We are looking for you who are a trained and experienced nursing assistant. It is meritorious if you have good knowledge and experience within geriatric care. You also have good computer skills and can document in the medical record system Cosmic.

Your Competencies

The variation in the work means that you, as an applicant, should be flexible, responsible, and able to adapt to acute situations, as well as have the breadth to step in where needed. Since the work is often physically demanding, it is a requirement that you have good physical fitness. You enjoy working with elderly people, have a good manner of dealing with people, and have good collaboration skills. You are also an engaged and positive colleague who contributes to a good working environment. Great importance will be placed on personal suitability, where interest in geriatric care weighs heavily.

We Offer

With us, it is important to have an adapted introduction based on previous experience. We offer you an introduction with an experienced nursing assistant and through a structured introduction program. After working as a nursing assistant in geriatrics for one year, you also have the opportunity to deepen your knowledge within geriatrics and apply for our internal training program, the Geriatric Academy.

We can offer you a full-time position or alternatively a temporary position. Working hours are scheduled in 2-shifts, night shifts may be offered if needed. You work every other weekend.

With us, you receive benefits that make a difference, read about the benefits here (https://regionuppsala.se/formaner/ (https://regionuppsala.se/formaner/)).
