For the icebreakers
The Swedish Maritime Administration's icebreakers keep Sweden open when winter is at its toughest. When the fairways freeze over, it is our crews that ensure that commercial shipping can continue – and as a messman, you are an important part of the machinery that makes everyday life on board function.
We are currently looking for 2-3 messmen for our icebreakers that operate both in harsh winter conditions and in various assignments during the ice-free part of the year.
Job Responsibilities
As a messman, you are the hub of comfort on board. You:
- ensure that common areas are clean, welcoming, and functional for a crew that works in shifts around the clock.
- are responsible for ship cleaning and maintaining order in the spaces that everyone uses.
- support the cook in the cold pantry and help prepare meals that provide energy during long work shifts.
- assist with serving and provisioning – an important part of keeping the ship running during longer periods at sea.
This is a role for you who enjoys order, service, and being part of a close-knit team where everyone contributes to the whole.
You will be employed by the Swedish Maritime Administration's Shipping Company, which means you may also serve on other vessels within the fleet.
Who are you?
To be considered for the role of Messman, you must have:
- a valid medical certificate for seafarers
- Basic Safety certificate
It is advantageous if you have:
- previous experience as a messman
- previous experience in restaurants or other service professions
- Medical First Aid certificate
We place great importance on your personal qualities. The work involves close collaboration with the rest of the crew on the ship, which requires you to have good teamwork skills while also taking responsibility for your tasks and being self-sufficient. You are also attentive and eager to learn new tasks and working methods.
