Postdoctoral Researcher in Bilingualism Research
The Department of Swedish and Multilingualism is one of the largest departments within the Faculty of Humanities at Stockholm University, with approximately 140 employees and over 5000 students each academic year.
The Centre for Bilingualism Research (https://www.su.se/enheter/centrum-for-tvasprakighetsforskning) is part of the Department of Swedish and Multilingualism and provides a broad base for theoretical and practical research aimed at increasing understanding and knowledge of bilingualism and multilingualism. The centre is a cross-linguistic and interdisciplinary unit within the language section of the Faculty of Humanities at Stockholm University. The centre's research covers psycholinguistic, educational, structural, sociolinguistic, interactional, and neurocognitive aspects of bilingualism and multilingualism.

Project Description
The postdoctoral researcher will conduct research within the framework of the project “Project Description” (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ALNM2oLqLeOdvIw8LEuI1Bmr_oC909PqadpGxyOBq-U/edit?tab=t.0) funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (grant no. 10.005.589) from 2026 to 2030. The project is conducted in collaboration with the University of Neuchâtel and will consist of a research group comprising two postdoctoral researchers and two doctoral students (one from each country) under the leadership of Associate Professor Klara Skogmyr Marian and Professor Simona Pekarek Doehler. Responsibilities
The postdoctoral researcher is expected to conduct research within the specified framework together with the project leaders and independently publish research results in leading international journals.
Specific tasks and responsibilities include coordinating data collection in collaboration with a doctoral student and possibly a research assistant, as well as collecting and analyzing interaction data in Swedish as a second language from a longitudinal and multimodal perspective. The postdoctoral researcher should also conduct comparative analyses with similar existing interaction data in French as a second language. Responsibilities also include regularly reporting ongoing data collection and data analyses and organizing work meetings and workshops together with the postdoctoral researcher in Switzerland.
Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for the position of postdoctoral researcher, a PhD or foreign degree assessed to be equivalent to a relevant doctoral degree is required. The degree must be obtained by the time the employment decision is made.
Assessment Criteria
It is advantageous if the PhD or equivalent has been obtained no more than three years before the application deadline. If there are special reasons, an earlier degree may also be considered advantageous. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, elected positions within trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or relevant service/assignments in the subject area.
In the appointment process, particular importance will be attached to scientific competence and the applicant's research experience in interaction, multimodality, second language acquisition, and/or related areas.
Particular emphasis will be placed on:
- academic excellence
- previous or current specialization in areas such as multimodal interaction analysis, conversation analysis, interactional linguistics, second language acquisition
- documented skills in conversation analysis and/or interactional linguistics
- proficiency in the Swedish language
Qualifications and Experience Requirements:
- extensive work with the collection and analysis of (multimodal) interaction data
- ability to work independently in the field and manage tasks efficiently and according to schedule
- good communicative and social skills
- advanced proficiency in Swedish and English, both spoken and written
Desirable Qualifications and Experience:
- knowledge and experience in analyzing second language interaction
- knowledge and experience in using tools for automatic extraction or corpus linguistic tools (e.g., AntConc)
- proficiency in French
About the Position
The position is for 80% and is permanent, but for at least two years and at most three years, with the possibility of extension if there are special reasons. Start date is September 1, 2026.
