Are you ready for a bigger challenge?
The Police Authority is Sweden's largest authority with approximately 40,000 employees across the country. With us, you have the opportunity to contribute to the Police's mission to increase safety and reduce crime in society. We are now looking for a detention guard for the Skaraborg police area.
The Skaraborg police area is one of five police areas in the West Police Region. The Skaraborg police area spans 15 municipalities and is divided into two local police areas: Western Skaraborg and Eastern Skaraborg. At the police area level, there is an investigation section and a police area office.
The place of employment is either in Skövde or Lidköping.
Job Responsibilities
As a detention guard, you work at the center of events and act based on equal treatment and the police's values. You are part of a group of detention guards led by a group leader. Work in the detention facility is conducted under the supervision of a station commander and in close cooperation with the local police area's other operations, such as intervention and investigation activities. As a detention guard, you handle and meet individuals who are deprived of their freedom for various reasons. Many are deprived of liberty for the purpose of investigating crimes, but it can also involve detentions due to intoxication or disturbances of public order. The pace of work varies over time and depends on how many people are deprived of their liberty for various reasons.
As a detention guard, you are the person that the detainee has the closest contact with during their time in the detention facility. Employment begins with a mandatory national internal training of 3 weeks full-time, which ends with a theoretical and a practical exam. You must pass these exams to be able to work as a detention guard.
Your main job responsibilities include:
- Assisting the intervention operations during reception and searching
- Monitoring and regularly checking on those in the detention facility and ensuring that the handling of the detained individuals is done in a legally secure and correct manner
- Participating in sampling, body searches, photography, evidence collection, and fingerprinting
- Monitoring and transporting individuals who are to be interrogated or transported
- Carrying out administrative tasks, for example, using the police's data system to document the detention and conducting record checks.
As we are a smaller police area, Lidköping and Skövde collaborate closely, and you may need to work at both locations. As we work in an operational environment, job responsibilities may change or expand.
Qualifications
This is an opportunity for you who have:
- A completed and approved high school education with full grades or equivalent education, or relevant work experience that the employer assesses as equivalent
- Experience working with a focus on personal contact with people that the employer deems relevant for the position (only contact via phone or computer is not relevant)
- Good ability to express yourself well in speech and writing in Swedish and English
- Good computer skills and experience working with a computer as a tool.
- Possess a B driver's license
- The work in the detention facility can be both mentally and physically challenging. Therefore, it is important that you are in good physical and mental health.
It is advantageous if you also have:
- Completed detention guard training with a passing result.
- Previous and current experience working with individuals in vulnerable situations that the employer finds relevant. For example, from the Police Authority, the Correctional Service, social services, or psychiatry.
- Experience in documentation in a role that the employer finds relevant.
- Non-Nordic language skills beyond English that the employer assesses as relevant for the function where you can use the language fluently in professional practice.
Personal Qualities
We are looking for someone with good self-awareness and personal maturity. As a detention guard, you meet people who are both physically and mentally unwell, which requires a professional approach and an attitude characterized by empathy and equal value for all, regardless of the reason for their detention.
As a detention guard, you apply a high level of security thinking, which means you are reliable in situations where physical violence may arise and have the ability to act calmly and professionally even in pressured situations. In the role, you work both independently and together with colleagues, which requires good collaboration skills as well as personal responsibility.
We will place great emphasis on personal qualities.
