Postdoctoral Researcher in Process Metallurgy

Luleå University of Technology is in strong growth with world-leading competence in several research areas. We shape the future through innovative education and ground-breaking research results, and based on the Arctic region, we create global social benefit. Our scientific and artistic research and education are conducted in close collaboration with international, national and regional companies, public actors and leading universities. Luleå University of Technology has a total turnover of nearly SEK 2.1 billion per year. We currently have 1,900 employees and 18,700 students.

In the coming years, multi-billion investments will be made in large projects in Northern Sweden to create a fossil-free society both nationally and globally. Luleå University of Technology is involved in several of these cutting-edge research projects and in the societal transformation that they entail. We offer a broad range of courses and study programmes to match the skills in demand. We hope that you will help us to build the sustainable companies and societies of the future.

The Process Metallurgy research group at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Natural Resources Engineering is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join our growing team. Our research spans fundamental and applied studies in pyro- and hydrometallurgy, with a strong emphasis on sustainable metallurgy and the development of resilient value chains.

Subject Description

Process Metallurgy deals with the sustainable extraction of metals from primary and secondary raw materials using both pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processes.

Project Description

The postdoctoral position is part of an interdisciplinary research project, a large collaborative initiative between academia and industry aimed at reducing the climate impact of cement production. The project investigates how electric arc furnace slag from steelmaking can be modified and valorized as a supplementary cementitious material, enabling reduced clinker content and significantly lower carbon dioxide emissions from cement and concrete.

You will contribute expertise in slag chemistry, thermodynamics, and circular material solutions, with a focus on developing a fundamental understanding of slag modification routes and their implications for material performance. The research combines thermodynamic modelling, laboratory-scale experiments, and advanced slag characterization to establish scientifically grounded concepts for resource-efficient and environmentally safe slag valorization.

The project is conducted in close collaboration with leading industrial partners in the steel and cement sectors, offering a unique opportunity to work at the interface between fundamental process metallurgy and industrially relevant, climate-driven innovation.

Duties

The duties of the postdoctoral researcher primarily comprise research. You are expected to conduct high-quality research with both fundamental and applied components, leading to publications in peer-reviewed international journals and presentations at international conferences. The position includes hands-on experimental research and modelling-based research activities within process metallurgy, as well as analysis and interpretation of experimental data. You will work in the field of process metallurgy, with activities linked to an international research and development project carried out in close collaboration with industrial partners.

Qualifications

To be eligible for employment as a postdoctoral researcher, the applicant must hold a PhD, or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD, in Process Metallurgy or a closely related or otherwise relevant subject. The doctoral degree should normally have been awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline; candidates with an earlier degree may also be considered if special grounds apply.

The successful candidate is expected to have a strong background in experimentally based research, with documented experience of laboratory-scale experiments and advanced characterization methods. A demonstrated scientific interest in slag chemistry and metallurgical processes is meritorious, particularly with respect to understanding the relationships between slag properties, process conditions, and their potential use as alternative cementitious materials. Relevant research experience may include topics such as trace element distribution between metal, slag, and gas phases; slag reactivity; and environmental and sustainability aspects of cement and concrete applications.

Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are required. The position demands a structured and analytical approach to research, as well as strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.

Personal suitability will also be assessed, with emphasis on the ability to work both independently and collaboratively, as well as motivation, initiative, and a strong sense of responsibility.

Further Information

The employment is full-time and limited to two years with the possibility of prolongation of maximum one additional year. Placement: Luleå. Starting date 2026-09-01 or earlier according to agreement.
