About the position
At the Children's Recovery Unit, we are part of a highly specialized team with interprofessional knowledge exchange together with our surgical specialties, and we look forward to you becoming one of us.
Here, postoperative care is provided for children who have undergone highly specialized pediatric surgery/orthopedics, tumor, neonatal, trauma, and neurosurgery. We operate around the clock with both elective and emergency flows. The Children's Recovery Unit is part of Pediatric Perioperative Medicine and Intensive Care (Pediatric PMI). Our mission is to provide healthcare, education, and research at a high international level.
Postop Children/BUVA
The Children's Recovery Unit (BUVA) has 11 beds and is located adjacent to the children's surgical department at New Karolinska. We care for the majority of all patients aged 0-18 years. Our aim is to ensure that the stay with us is a positive experience for children and parents. Being able to convey safety and provide a good reception is important to us.
As an assistant university nurse step 5 in pain management, you will work with preventive measures, treatment, and nursing actions associated with postoperative complications. You will be responsible for operational and competency development in the area. Your mission includes strengthening and developing care for the patient through quality assurance of routines and methods, as well as promoting an evidence-based approach.
The assignment as an assistant university nurse comprises 20% of a full-time position. You will have day, evening, and weekend shifts. During the summer months and Christmas/New Year, the working hours will consist of 100% clinical service. We have a fixed schedule with work every 3rd weekend.

Employment applies to specialist nurses, at least step 5 on the competency ladder. Application and decision regarding the position as Assistant University Nurse can only occur after employment.
Qualifications
Requirements:
- Specialist nurse in intensive care, anesthesia, or pediatric and adolescent medicine
- 5 years of clinical work experience in the specialty
- At least two years of experience in advanced postoperative care.
- Master's degree in Nursing Education 7.5 credits.
Meritorious:
- Education and/or experience in project, change, or improvement work
- Education in pain management
- Experience in pediatric care
Being an assistant university nurse means that you have real and formal competence according to step 5 in the competency ladder within Region Stockholm. About the recruitment process
Appointment as an assistant university nurse occurs after appropriate decisions from the assessment group for nurses at Karolinska University Hospital.
Applicants fill out the application for step placement 5-7 according to the competency ladder for nurses, signed by the applicant and verified by two persons, and attach to the application:
- proof of registration as a nurse from the National Board of Health and Welfare
- proof of nursing education/teaching 7.5 credits - course after the bachelor's degree
- proof of specialist nurse degree (if required by the employer)
- proof of master's degree
- publication list
- transcript of completed courses. For example, a LADOK extract from Karolinska Institute.
The application must clearly state the defined clinical care area within nursing. Examples can be nutrition, pain, wounds, or nursing within a specific flow/patient group.
Describe in the application how you will perform the following in the assignment and how it will benefit the patient:
- follow current research and development
- drive the implementation of current knowledge
- initiate and drive competency development, education, and care development activities
- supervise/teach colleagues and/or students
- initiate and participate in nursing research in the area
