Forecast Meteorologists Wanted at SMHI

Will it be a snowstorm, rain, or bright sunshine this weekend? Do you want to be the one with the answers? At SMHI, we are now looking for forecast meteorologists who want to help create weather forecasts, warnings, and decision-making support that assist both society and the individual – around the clock, all year round.

SMHI is a Swedish expert authority with a global perspective and a vital task of predicting changes in weather, water, and climate. Based on scientific principles and through knowledge, research, and services, we contribute to increasing the sustainability of society as a whole. The Weather Forecast unit is divided into three groups, one at each office in Norrköping, Gothenburg, and Uppsala. We are now looking for employees for Norrköping and Gothenburg.

About the Position

As a forecast meteorologist, you will be part of a cheerful team of about 75 forecast meteorologists who are all driven by the desire to contribute to the sustainability of society. Each office has its specific niche, and therefore the tasks differ slightly depending on which office you will work at. Overall, the work involves producing and delivering weather and warning information to the public and professional clients. We assist municipalities, authorities, and private clients with forecasts and warning information, as well as provide content for our website and social media. This involves a lot of contact and collaboration, including with Swedish Radio for written and verbal weather forecasts, as well as with clients in shipping, the energy market, and road and rail traffic.

In addition to contact with external parties, you may also participate in various projects and development work with other parts of SMHI where your knowledge of meteorology will be utilized.

About You

We are looking for someone with a meteorological education or equivalent that meets WMO's competency requirements, as well as completed PMU. We ask that you attach a transcript or equivalent course certificate with your application. Very good knowledge of Swedish and good knowledge of English are required, and additional language skills are an asset.

It is also advantageous to have:

  • Experience in meteorological forecasting work, as well as knowledge of hydrology and oceanography
  • Experience participating in radio or TV broadcasts with weather content
  • Experience in the energy sector
  • Experience in project work and having worked as an educator or teacher
  • Experience working with social media/moving images/communication/websites
  • Programming skills, as well as knowledge or experience in AI/ML.

As a person, you need to be communicative, outgoing, and able to collaborate easily as much of the work is done with your colleagues or in contact with clients. Since the intensity and tasks vary, flexibility and the ability to act rationally in stressful situations are of great importance. You also need to have the ability to plan, structure, and be proactive in your tasks. We also see it as important that everyone in the group contributes to development and a pleasant atmosphere.
