PhD Position in Theoretical Physics
Do you want to work in theoretical physics, supported by competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Do you want an employer that invests in sustainable employee engagement and offers secure, beneficial working conditions? Welcome to apply for a PhD position in theoretical physics at Uppsala University.
The Department of Physics and Astronomy is one of Uppsala University’s largest departments with nearly 400 employees, of which about 125 are PhD students. The department conducts world-class research and education in both theoretical and experimental physics and has extensive collaboration with the outside world. Research is conducted in ten research divisions and covers everything from the incomprehensibly small to the vast, including energy supply, climate development, new materials, and the universe. This entire spectrum is also reflected in the department’s courses and educational programs. Approximately 2,500 students take courses at both undergraduate and advanced levels each year at the department. Read more at http://www.physics.uu.se (http://www.physics.uu.se).
The PhD positions are available within the Division of Theoretical Physics, one of the 10 divisions within the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Uppsala University. Our division offers a world-class environment for research in quantum field theory, gravitation, string theory, and related areas of mathematical physics. The division currently consists of about 30 researchers. The positions are part of projects funded by the European Research Council focusing on scattering amplitudes. More information can be found on the group's website: https://www.uu.se/en/department/physics-and-astronomy/research/theoretical-physics (https://www.uu.se/en/department/physics-and-astronomy/research/theoretical-physics)
Job Description
The division plans to recruit two or more ambitious PhD students in theoretical physics. The main activity will be research on scattering amplitudes within quantum field theory, gravitation, string theory, gravitational waves, and effective field theory, as well as their interplay with particle phenomenology, number theory, and algebraic geometry. Other duties related to teaching and administration at the department will be included in the positions (max 20%).
Qualifications
Eligible for doctoral education is someone who has:
- completed a master's degree in physics or mathematics, or
- completed at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level including an independent project of at least 15 higher education credits, or
- acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way.
The application should include a description (about one A4 page) summarizing the applicant's qualifications, academic experiences, and research interests. We appreciate if the applicant indicates preference and interest in research in one of the following two directions:
- a) applications of amplitude methods for particle physics, effective field theory, and gravitational waves,
- b) mathematical structures of scattering amplitudes, with emphasis on string theory and Feynman integrals.
The application should also include a CV, copies of university transcripts, completed theses or manuscripts, and other relevant publications.
Desirable/meritorious
We plan to recruit a responsible person with a strong academic background who works well in a research group. Special emphasis will be placed on any previous research experience in the areas of quantum field theory, gravitation, string theory, gravitational waves, particle physics, number theory, or algebraic geometry.
Regulations for doctoral students can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5 §§ 1-7 and at https://regler.uu.se/?languageId=3 (https://regler.uu.se/?languageId=3).
