Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science

Department of Applied Animal Science and Welfare

One Health is an integrated, unifying approach aimed at sustainably balancing and optimizing the health of people, animals, and ecosystems, recognizing that the health of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants, and the broader environment are closely interconnected and dependent on each other. By connecting people, animals, and the environment, One Health can help address the full spectrum of disease control – from prevention to detection, preparedness, response, and management – contributing to global health. The VH Faculty hosts the platform SLU Future One Health, a strategic platform for promoting interdisciplinary research, education, and collaboration for good health and welfare for animals and humans in sustainable ecosystems.

As a complement to the faculty-wide role of SLU Future One Health, the VH faculty is now establishing a One Health Hub from the perspective of animal husbandry. The hub has three core areas, each with its One Health Professor: 1) Comparative Medicine: similarities and differences in biology between pets and humans, 2) Antimicrobial Resistance: combating ineffective drugs, and 3) Food-producing healthy animals in circular systems.

At the Department of Applied Animal Science and Welfare, our goal is to promote good animal husbandry and animal welfare as well as sustainable food production with high product quality through research and education about animals, focusing on feed and nutrition, care and environment, ethology and animal ethics, animal welfare, and animal protection.
