About the Unit

161st Combat Control and Air Surveillance Battalion operates around the clock, year-round to monitor and defend Swedish airspace. You will work at the 1611 Combat Control and Air Surveillance Company, which is one of three companies in the battalion. Your workplace will be the Air Combat Control Center with the call sign Grizzly, located in Bålsta.

Main Responsibilities

As an air surveillance operator, your main task will be in the incident readiness combat control center, where you contribute to creating the Armed Forces' air situation picture. The position also involves supporting the processing of flight permits submitted by other nations, including those concerning state flights.

You will work with live flight operations, which means the position offers competitive salary within the Armed Forces. Physical and mental well-being is highly prioritized, which is why we have three hours of training during work hours each week, as well as access to a psychologist and occupational therapist. You are entitled to 28–35 vacation days, depending on your age.

You will have the opportunity to develop in various directions, for example in system development together with SAAB, deepening in data link communication, or leading training of future colleagues at a functional school, depending on which parts of the position interest you the most. The position also provides great opportunities for further education and is meritorious for specialist officer and officer training with a focus on air surveillance. The position will involve some travel, for example to serve at the other companies. Working hours are mainly during the day, but night work may occur.

REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications

  • Completed military service with an air surveillance focus and approved grades
  • Good ability to express yourself verbally and in writing in Swedish and English

Personal Qualities

We are looking for someone with good IT skills, and we prefer that you are analytical, driven, and curious, and enjoy a problem-solving role. A large part of the work involves contact with users where you will possess a higher technical competence, which requires you to be pedagogical and clear in your daily communication. We also see that you as a person are social, have a positive attitude, and are a team player who can also work independently. You are organized, like to take responsibility, and take operational safety very seriously. Great importance will be placed on personal suitability.

MERITORIOUS

  • Experience and knowledge of the C2StriC system
  • Experience in radio, tele, and data communication
  • Experience with the Armed Forces' command systems
  • Experience in IT/Tele/Flight-related tasks
  • Driving license B

Other

Employment form: Fixed-term employment according to GSS/K agreement (6 years with the possibility of extension up to 12 years). The Armed Forces may apply a six-month probationary period.

Employment rate: Full-time

Work location: Bålsta. F 16 also has operations in other locations, which may involve business trips.

Working hours: Mainly during the day. Night work may occur in the position. Weekend work may occur during training activities.

Start date: 2026-06-15, or by agreement.

Salary: We apply individual salary setting.

Information about the Armed Forces and the recruiting unit:

Uppland Air Wing, F 16, has its headquarters at Uppsala garrison. The unit is part of the Swedish Air Force and is responsible for the operation and monitoring of Uppsala airport as well as training conscripts in several different positions in the Air Force. The unit also leads the 161st Combat Control and Air Surveillance Battalion, which commands combat aircraft in the air and maintains the constant monitoring of Swedish airspace. The unit operates from several different locations in the country and constitutes an important part of the growth period that the Air Force is facing.
