Research Infrastructure Specialist/Application Expert

Workplace Description

LUNARC is a center at Lund University that provides services for high-performance computing (HPC), visualization, and storage.

LUNARC collaborates with research groups and offers them expertise and courses in scientific computing, visualization, and resource utilization. LUNARC currently operates several computing and visualization resources with associated storage. To enhance the usability of these resources, an interactive HPC service has been developed (remote desktop environment) with hardware-accelerated graphics. This service can provide customized environments for different research groups.

LUNARC staff have expertise in many areas, enabling us to support our researchers in various ways: from hardware, visualization, and storage to development projects. We collaborate with several research groups and infrastructures such as NAISS, MAX IV, and Bioinformatics. Staying updated with technology is crucial, and LUNARC offers its employees both internal and external training opportunities.

LUNARC currently has 13 employees consisting of system engineers, application experts, and developers. LUNARC is a department within the Faculty of Engineering (LTH) at Lund University but is a shared resource for the entire university. We are located in newly renovated premises with comfortable meeting, lounge areas, and staff facilities.

Job Responsibilities and Areas of Responsibility

The position is part of an initiative for high-performance computing, storage, and visualization around the computing resource COSMOS, as well as engagement within the national infrastructure NAISS where LUNARC is a branch.

As a research infrastructure specialist/application expert, you will be the link between researchers and the resources for computing, storage, and visualization that LUNARC provides. The role includes helping researchers use the resources effectively and easily. This may involve installing and optimizing the software that a researcher needs. As an application expert, you can also assist researchers in optimizing computational software and the associated workflows around LUNARC's resources.

Job tasks include, for example:

  • Providing user support to researchers with various scientific backgrounds so they can optimally use LUNARC's and NAISS's resources.
  • Providing advice and development of researchers' computational software.
  • Developing researchers' workflows around computing, visualization, and storage.
  • Developing and offering training for users in the form of courses, seminars, and workshops.
  • Developing user documentation and web pages to make it easier to use LUNARC's resources.

Qualifications

Requirements for the position are:

  • PhD or equivalent in numerical analysis, computer science, image analysis, physics, or another related discipline.
  • Experience with Linux/Unix-based systems.
  • Installation and maintenance of scientific software.
  • Scientific programming in one or more of the following languages: Python, MATLAB, C/C++, Fortran.
  • Presentation skills in English, both spoken and written.
  • Experience in training/teaching.
  • The ability to work both independently and as part of a team is of great importance for the position.
  • Experience of independent work on projects together with researchers and research groups.

Desirable qualifications for the position are:

  • Image analysis and visualization.
  • Knowledge of various Python-based frameworks such as PyQt, Pandas, Matplotlib, or Seaborn, among others.
  • Parallel programming (MPI, OpenMP, CUDA).
  • Knowledge of the EasyBuild build environment used for building scientific software.
  • General knowledge of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. AI/ML.

Other

The position is permanent with a workload of 100 percent. Start date as soon as possible or by agreement. A probationary period may apply.
