Resident Physician

In Region Gotland, you can develop and grow, both as an individual and together with others. When you work with us, you contribute to making Gotland an even better place for people in all walks of life. We make each other better.

The island's location requires the resources of a large hospital but also brings the closeness and community of a smaller hospital. Within healthcare in Gotland, these close collaborations are built quickly.

The decision-making paths are short, creating agility for patients and employees. We collaborate with Karolinska University Hospital for centralized care. The healthcare organization is small and familiar, with great curiosity about each new group of resident physicians. There is good cooperation between primary care, psychiatry, and somatic inpatient care, which creates good conditions for residency training.

Your Responsibilities

The following placements are included in the service:

  • Surgical specialties (surgery block) - six months
  • Internal medicine specialties (medicine block) - six months
  • Psychiatry - three months
  • General medicine - six months

Total training time is 21 months.

General medicine is placed last during the service; otherwise, the order may vary. During the surgery block, there is an opportunity to observe in another surgical unit or radiology for one to two weeks.

During the medicine block, service includes work at the infectious disease clinic and also the opportunity to observe in another medical unit, such as the pediatric clinic.

The general medicine placement can be done at a health center in Visby or in a locality on the Gotland countryside.

At each main placement, you will have a supervisor. Each resident group has two mentors who follow the group throughout the employment period and meet every month.

Who Are You?

You who are applying have an approved medical degree, or you are expected to receive an approved degree before starting.

An employment contract cannot be signed until the degree is verified against the issuing university. You have good knowledge of the Swedish language, corresponding to the requirements of the National Board of Health and Welfare for Swedish medical license. Medical work after graduation with good references, especially references from a supervisor, is meritorious, as is medical work within Region Gotland with good references.

In addition to formal qualifications, we also place great importance on personal maturity, judgment, empathy, the ability for self-reflection, and collaboration skills. We recruit resident physicians with a focus on the region's future competence supply, and local ties can be meritorious. Furthermore, we see that you are engaged, communicative, have the ability for self-reflection, and possess leadership qualities.

Before a hiring decision is made, a background check will be conducted through an extract from the criminal record.
