Postdoctoral Researcher in Marine Geology
Gothenburg University meets societal challenges with versatile knowledge. With 58,000 students and 6,800 employees, the university is a large and inspiring workplace. Strong research and attractive education attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and perspectives, Gothenburg University contributes to a better future.
The Department of Marine Sciences (https://www.gu.se/marina-vetenskaper (https://www.gu.se/marina-vetenskaper)) at Gothenburg University has the most complete environment for marine science and marine education in Sweden. Only a few similar organizations exist in Europe. With access to unique infrastructure and a broad scientific competence area that has a clear connection to societal needs and challenges, the Department's activities contribute to new solutions to global challenges concerning the ocean.
The Department of Marine Sciences conducts research, education, and collaboration related to the ocean and its resources. Activities are conducted in Gothenburg, at research stations, Tjärnö Marine Laboratory, Kristineberg Marine Research Station, and on the research vessel Skagerak. The department has an interdisciplinary breadth that encompasses subjects such as marine biology, marine chemistry, marine geology, marine cultural heritage, and oceanography, with research areas spanning from coastal to open ocean. Our researchers and students often play prominent roles in international expeditions in Antarctica, the Arctic, and the major oceans, but also work in the Swedish coastal zone and in our newly built laboratories with advanced equipment and complex analytical methods. The department also offers a broad educational palette with a bachelor's program, three master's programs, and a doctoral program in the marine field.
Subject
Marine Geology
Subject Description
The postdoctoral researcher will join an international and interdisciplinary research team specializing in benthic foraminifera and sediment biogeochemistry from Sweden (Gothenburg University), France (LPG University of Angers), and Germany (University of Hamburg) and will be employed in the project “FAME: Fjord Alien Microeukaryotes – New Drivers of Ecosystem Functioning?” funded by the Swedish Research Council (VR). Knowledge about marine alien and invasive species is strongly focused on larger organisms, most of which can negatively impact ecosystems. However, hidden invaders (e.g., microbial eukaryotes such as foraminifera) can contribute beneficial ecosystem functions, such as carbon mineralization and nutrient reduction. The FAME project aims to define the contribution of the invasive species, Nonionella sp. T1, to nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) cycles and identify the species' impact on biodiversity in fjords. We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher with a strong background in living benthic foraminifera and/or marine biogeochemistry to enhance our understanding of the role of invasive microeukaryotes in nitrogen and phosphorus cycles in fjords.
