Department of Aquatic Resources
Do you want to work in an inspiring environment and contribute to the sustainable use of our seas, lakes, and rivers? At the Department of Aquatic Resources (SLU Aqua), we are passionate about our vision of 'strong fish stocks in healthy waters'. We are growing and looking for employees who want to develop and make a difference with us. The Department of Aquatic Resources conducts environmental analysis, advice, research, and education in aquatic ecology with a focus on fish and shellfish. It is SLU's largest department with over 180 employees at four main locations: Ultuna, Lysekil, Öregrund, and Stockholm (Drottningholm), as well as three field stations. Our operations are strongly focused on data collection and analysis of fish, fishing, and ecosystems. The department is characterized by intense collaboration with the surrounding community, creating a vibrant research environment and providing us with unique opportunities to generate knowledge that is close to management and directly applicable in practice. About the Job
The work is based on a regional action program for the marine environment in the 8-fjords area, where we participate in the design, follow-up, and evaluation of various measures together with other knowledge organizations and managers from local to national levels. The overall goal of the program is to restore large predatory fish so that it can perform its structuring role in coastal ecosystems and contribute to a good marine environment. As part of this work, you are expected to lead sub-projects in the field, analyze and compile data, and assist in writing reports and materials for management.
Your tasks will include fieldwork with sampling of fish communities, as well as tagging and genetic sampling of selected species. You are expected to lead and carry out sub-tasks in the follow-up together with colleagues. In the project, we work with telemetry and hydrophones, where you will maintain receivers and collect data on fish movements. You may also work with other monitoring methods such as stereo cameras and test fishing.
The work involves providing scientific support for the ecosystem-based marine management being developed in the 8+fjords area, where interactions between fish and top predators such as seals, cormorants, and porpoises are central parts to follow up. The work may also involve providing scientific support for fish management and monitoring of management measures related to marine protected areas.
You will be part of a team of marine biologists investigating the sea with the goal of understanding and improving our marine environment in close collaboration with managing authorities and other knowledge organizations.
Your Background
We are looking for someone with a bachelor's or master's degree in biology or a relevant field. You should have experience and knowledge of the marine environment. You have the ability to quickly understand new issues, identify key questions, make relevant decisions, and work independently. You should have documented experience in compiling and analyzing data, as well as experience in writing reports. We are looking for someone who enjoys creating contacts and collaborating with other organizations, stakeholders, and the public. A driver's license for a passenger car (B) is required.
Experience and knowledge of fish in marine coastal ecosystems, as well as previous experience working with marine environmental issues, is an advantage. Previous work within a managing authority or research experience is also a plus. It is also beneficial if you have experience working at sea with field sampling. Experience in operating small boats is desirable, as well as experience with technical systems such as hydrophones, telemetry, or stereo cameras.
We place great emphasis on your personal qualities and previous work experience. Good collaboration skills and flexibility are important traits, but you also need to be able to work independently. Experience with interview studies and compiling historical information is an advantage. Due to the need for communication with Swedish authorities, stakeholders, and the public, particular emphasis is placed on the ability to communicate in Swedish. We also expect you to express yourself well in both spoken and written Swedish and English.
