Library Assistant at the Total Defence Research Institute (FOI)

The Total Defence Research Institute (FOI) is a government agency conducting world-leading research in defence and security to support Sweden's military and civilian defence. The research spans several areas, such as underwater, cyber defence, space, electronic warfare, sensor systems, civil defence, CBRNe (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive substances), military platforms including weapons and protection, as well as security policy analyses. FOI's research plays a key role in building Sweden's defence capability.

About the Position

At FOI, the library works with research literature, databases, and subscriptions and is an important resource in the research activities. In the role of librarian, you will guide and train FOI's researchers in database and information retrieval. The emphasis of the work is on information provision. You will participate in the library's daily routine as well as in strategic development work.

Your Responsibilities Include:

  • Purchasing books (printed and e-books)
  • Cataloguing books in our library system
  • Procurement of databases
  • Managing interlibrary loans of books and articles
  • Handling journal subscriptions (both printed publications and digital)
  • Following up and renewing contracts with both Swedish and international suppliers
  • Publishing news and information on the intranet
  • Compiling relevant statistics for the library's operations

About the Unit

FOI's library provides appreciated support for the agency's researchers. Currently, we have two librarians, but as the agency grows, we need to expand our team. Therefore, we are looking for a new colleague!

We are an internal government library, but with many points of contact. We provide a large number of databases and manage journal subscriptions, article, and book purchases for all of FOI.

The library is part of the Publications Section, and you will report to the section head. In the section, there are, in addition to the library, functions for printing, report administration, and graphic design. The section belongs to the Communications Unit, which is part of the Research Support Department. The Communications Unit also includes functions for digital channels, press services, communication consulting, and libraries. Do You Have the Competence Profile We Need?

Requirements

  • Qualified librarian (in library and information science or equivalent as assessed by the employer)
  • At least one year of experience working in a library
  • Experience with library systems
  • Good ability to express yourself verbally and in writing in Swedish and English
  • Good knowledge of the Office suite

To succeed in this role, it is important that you are service-oriented, flexible, and have good collaboration skills, as the work involves many contacts both within FOI and with external partners. You are structured and remain stable even in stressful situations. We place great emphasis on personal qualities!

Meritorious

  • Experience working in special, research, or university libraries
  • Experience working in a library at a government agency
  • Experience with discovery systems
  • Experience working with web publishing tools
  • Experience in giving lectures, training, and courses
  • Knowledge of and experience with e-resources
