Description of the Department

Our department at the Enoch Thulin Laboratory develops laser spectroscopic measurement techniques for applications in industry and the environment.

Within the group for biophotonic remote sensing, we are experts in the interaction of light with biological tissue and living organisms. We also have a long tradition of taking realistic photonic instrumentation from the laboratory into natural environments. Specifically, we have developed Scheimpflug lidar for environmental analysis. For over a decade, we have been leaders in laser-based remote sensing of insects, both in creating field sensors and in the fundamental understanding of light's interaction with freely flying insects. We are now trying to push the boundaries of measuring nanostructures on insect surfaces, the contents of their bodies, and the quantity of insects in relation to CO2 and convection cells in the atmosphere.

Being a PhD Student

As a PhD student, you are both admitted as a student and employed at Lund University. As a research student, you are trained in a scientific approach. This can be briefly described as gaining practice in critical and analytical thinking, solving problems independently using the right methodological choices, and developing research ethical awareness. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to work on projects, develop your leadership skills, and enhance your pedagogical abilities. Throughout your studies, you will be guided by supervisors. Subject and Project Description

The project aims to develop and explore infrared hyperspectral lidar technology and test several applications. Within the project, we will design a broadband and a high-resolution hyperspectral lidar. The development will be done using ray tracing, Computer Aided Design, and 3D printing. After calibration, the instruments will be tested in the field for applications related to blood-sucking vectors and conservation ecology in relation to wind power. Fieldwork will be interdisciplinary in collaboration with ecologists in the field. Validation of the method will require complementary laboratory reference measurements.

Job Responsibilities

You will primarily focus on your doctoral education, which includes participation in research projects as well as doctoral courses, seminars, and conferences.

The job responsibilities include:

  • Designing an ultra-broadband hyperspectral lidar (900-2500 nm) using Stirling-cooled HgCdTe image sensors and supercontinuum sources.
  • Designing a molecular lidar for high-resolution mapping of oxygen.
  • Working with ray tracing, Computer Aided Design, and 3D printing of optomechanical layouts.
  • Calibrating instruments for distance, scattering cross-section, and wavelengths.
  • Developing instrumentation and procedures for characterization of samples.
  • Conducting field and laboratory experiments for remote sensing of nanostructures on insect surfaces.
  • Conducting field and laboratory experiments for remote sensing of tissue microstructure inside insects.
  • Conducting field experiments with blood-sucking insects in relation to livestock.
  • Conducting field experiments with insects and bats in relation to wind power.
  • Participating in the group's field and measurement campaigns and collaborating with others in the group as well as interdisciplinary collaboration with partners from biology and ecology.
  • Contributing to popular science communication.

The job responsibilities may also include participation in teaching and other departmental work (maximum 20% of working time).

Qualifications

To be admitted and employed as a PhD student, you must meet the requirements below.

Eligibility Requirements

Basic eligibility for doctoral education is met if you have:

  • completed a master's degree or
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the master's level or
  • acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way.

The requirements for specific eligibility for the doctoral education subject of physics are met by those who have:

  • at least 30 higher education credits at the master's level relevant to the subject area, of which a thesis of at least 15 higher education credits at the master's level, or
  • a master's degree in engineering physics or a related field, or a master's degree in physics or a related field.

The specific eligibility can also be obtained through other equivalent education, which is assessed in each individual case. To enable interdisciplinary initiatives and significant deepening in certain areas, other qualifications than the applicant's subject-specific competence in physics may be considered. Finally, it is required that the student is deemed to have the ability needed to benefit from the education.
