The goal of the research at the Unit for Integrative Epidemiology at the Institute of Environmental Medicine is to improve the understanding of the causes and consequences of ill health and diseases, focusing on neurodegenerative diseases, psychiatric disorders, and Covid-19.

We use interdisciplinary approaches in epidemiological research and integrate various scientific tools when addressing specific research questions. The unit is seeking an enthusiastic research assistant. The position is a 6-month fixed-term employment.

Your role

The successful candidate will support and contribute to several research projects. Key responsibilities include data management; updating and maintaining existing databases; conducting quality controls of databases; documenting data management procedures; developing machine learning models; and performing statistical analyses. The position requires the ability to work effectively in a highly interdisciplinary and international research environment, as well as a strong commitment to continuous professional development.

Who are you?

Requirements for the position:

  • Advanced skills in data management and statistical analysis.
  • A self-motivated curiosity regarding the interpretation of the neurological and biological foundations behind research results in data science.
  • Good understanding of, and commitment to, data protection and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
  • Strong accuracy, good problem-solving skills, and well-developed collaboration and communication skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

Technical requirements:

  • Experience with machine learning technologies such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, and SHAP.
  • Experience applying machine learning methods in brain development, predictive and preventive medicine, epidemiology, and/or public health research.
  • Research experience from high-performance computing environments.
  • Experience using DevOps tools (GitHub) and established industry standards or tools for code quality (e.g., MyPy, linting, reusable code, and docstrings).

Meritorious:

  • Experience understanding and interpreting sMRI and fMRI images.
  • Experience conducting and interpreting analyses of functional connectivity.
  • Previous research experience in neurodegenerative diseases and registry-based epidemiological research.
  • Previous scientific publications demonstrating the ability to apply machine learning techniques to various types of data.
  • Knowledge of neuronal signaling, demyelination, and/or neurochemical imbalances (natural or drug-induced).
