Postdoctoral Researchers in Digital Philology

The faculty is seeking two postdoctoral researchers in digital philology to be employed at one of the faculty's four departments, while being part of a cross-departmental and dynamic research environment linked to DigPhil – the national graduate school for early languages and digital philology.

The graduate school is funded by the Swedish Research Council (2023–2027) and coordinated by Uppsala University in collaboration with Lund University and Stockholm University. DigPhil trains a new generation of philologists with knowledge of and skills in the rich traditions of language disciplines while mastering modern language technology methods.

Job Responsibilities

The job responsibilities mainly consist of independent research and the preparation of applications for external research grants within the field of digital philology, i.e., research that develops or uses computer-assisted methods to answer questions about older languages and texts. Projects within all areas of philological research may be relevant, such as:

  • Hermeneutics – such as conceptual history, sentiment analysis, thematic modeling, or other forms of information extraction from older texts
  • Paleography and textual criticism – such as automatic handwriting recognition, stemmatological analysis, or digital conjectural criticism
  • Linguistics – such as morphosyntactic annotation of historical corpora or comparative historical linguistics
  • Language technology – development of models and/or tools for analyzing historical texts
  • Text analysis – such as stylometric, rhetorical, or narratological analysis

The research should have a clear connection to one of the faculty's main areas and focus on the pre-modern or early modern form of the relevant languages: English, Finno-Ugric languages, Greek, Indology, Iranian languages, Chinese, Latin, linguistics, Romance languages, Semitic languages, Slavic languages, language technology, Swedish, Swedish as a second language, Scandinavian studies, Turkish languages, or German.

The position also includes contributing to the development of a cross-departmental scientific environment in collaboration with the national graduate school in digital philology (DigPhil), with up to 20% of a full-time position. The holder is expected to have their main working hours based at the workplace in Uppsala.

Qualifications

Eligible for appointment as a postdoctoral researcher is a person who has obtained a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a doctoral degree, in a subject relevant to the job responsibilities. The degree must have been obtained at the time of the employment decision but no more than three years before the application deadline unless special circumstances exist. Special circumstances refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, trust assignments within trade unions, or other similar circumstances.

Documented competence as a researcher in the field of digital philology is a requirement, which means:

  • research competence equivalent to a doctoral degree in computational linguistics/language technology and experience working with historical texts, or
  • research competence equivalent to a doctoral degree in a language subject or linguistics and proven competence in programming and qualified use of language technology tools.

Good knowledge of English, both spoken and written, is a requirement. The applicant should also possess the personal qualities required to perform the position well.

Selection

We welcome applicants with either language technology method development related to philological research questions or qualified and original application of tools to tackle philological research questions.

In the selection among eligible applicants, particular emphasis will be placed on scientific skill and originality. The scope, depth, and breadth of the applicant's previous work will be significant. Consideration will also be given to the extent to which the research plan clarifies how the planned research effort builds on the applicant's previous work and how it can complement and enhance the faculty's research in digital philology. Since teaching may be included, documented pedagogical merits will also be given weight.

Application should include:

  • Application letter motivating the choice of department
  • Research plan of no more than three pages (excluding references)
  • CV
  • Copy of the applicant's doctoral thesis
  • Copies of relevant degrees
  • Other relevant publications
  • Other documents referred to
