Project Description
PhD Subject: Human-Computer Interaction
We are looking for an engaged PhD candidate for a research project addressing the pressing challenge of declining reading skills among young students in Sweden.
The project aims to develop and evaluate human-centered AI solutions for reading instruction, where AI is used to support both teachers and students.
As a PhD candidate, you will contribute to:
- developing and investigating human-centered AI support that assists teachers and promotes children's reading development,
- collaborating with teachers and students,
- analyzing the effects of AI-based reading training, and
- developing theoretical and practical frameworks for how AI can be responsibly integrated into teaching.
You will work in an interdisciplinary research environment within human-computer interaction, learning analytics, and educational technology, in close collaboration with Swedish and international researchers, schools, and technology developers.
We are looking for someone with a background in interaction design, computer science, learning/educational technology, cognitive science, or applied AI, who is interested in children's learning and the role of technology in education. Proficiency in Swedish is an advantage as a significant portion of the work will take place in the Swedish school context.
The position is a full-time PhD position funded by the Swedish Research Council (VR). You will be part of the research environment READ: Human-AI Reading Support at KTH.
Supervision: Olga Viberg and Olov Engwall are proposed to supervise the PhD candidate. A decision will be made upon admission.
Eligibility for Admission
To be admitted to doctoral education (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility:
- completed a degree at the advanced level, or
- fulfilled course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level, or
- acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way, within or outside the country.

To succeed in your doctoral studies at KTH, you need to be goal-oriented and persistent in your work. In the selection of applicants, the ability to:
- independently drive your work forward,
- collaborate with others,
- maintain a professional attitude, and
- analyze and work with complex issues will be assessed.
After the eligibility requirements, great importance will be placed on personal qualities.

Information about Admission and Employment
Only those who have been admitted to doctoral education may be employed as PhD candidates. The total employment period may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for four years. An employed PhD candidate may, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within, for example, education and administration. A new employment as a PhD candidate is valid for a maximum of one year, and the employment may then be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. For studies that will conclude with a licentiate degree, the total employment period may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for two years.
