BT Doctor

Region Gotland offers a twelve-month independent BT program.

Here you will receive a good introduction to Swedish healthcare and a solid foundation for future specialization training.

The island's location requires the resources of a large hospital but also means the closeness and community of a smaller hospital. Within healthcare in Gotland, these close collaborations develop quickly. The decision-making paths are short, creating agility for patients and employees. We collaborate with Karolinska University Hospital for centralized care.

The healthcare organization on the island is small and familial, with great curiosity about each new group of BT doctors. There is good cooperation between primary care, psychiatry, and somatic inpatient care, which creates good conditions for a safe BT training.

Your Responsibilities

The position is a fixed-term employment as a BT doctor for twelve months. The training period during BT is estimated in Region Gotland to be about one year, but can be extended if the doctor needs to undergo more training days or educational activities to meet the goals.

The position is full-time, 40 hours/week. On-call duty is included during all placements but to varying degrees.

The training includes the following placements:

  • Internal medicine specialties - medicine block - six months
  • Surgical specialties - surgery, orthopedics - six months
  • Psychiatry - two months
  • General medicine - four months

Your emergency care placement will therefore take place either at the internal medicine clinic or the surgical clinic. You may submit requests regarding this, but lottery may also occur.

During the medicine block, shorter training periods at the infectious disease clinic are included, as well as the opportunity to observe at another medical unit, such as the children's clinic. During the surgery block, shorter training periods at the ICU and the opportunity to observe at another surgical unit such as ENT or gynecology are included.

Your main supervisor will work at the clinic where you start your basic training. General medicine is placed last during the training. The placement in general medicine can be done at a health center in Visby or in a locality on the Gotland countryside.

During the training, you are expected to participate in ongoing lectures and teaching days throughout the BT year. At each placement, there is a responsible study director, and you will be assigned a personal clinical supervisor. You also have a main supervisor who follows you and your professional development throughout the BT period. We hope that your time with us will be so inspiring that you will want to stay within Region Gotland even after your BT.

You are expected to take personal responsibility for your training and professional development, which means actively seeking feedback and assessments of your competence at the workplace. You are responsible for documenting your training and professional development in a portfolio as a basis for applying for a BT certificate.

Who Are You?

We are looking for someone who has a medical license approved by the National Board of Health and Welfare and has not completed Swedish AT. Your language skills in Swedish correspond to level C1 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), and you have good medical knowledge. You are an EU citizen, permanently residing in Sweden, or have a residence permit that allows you to apply for a work permit as a BT doctor in Sweden. Previous service as a junior doctor within Swedish healthcare with good references is an advantage.

In addition to formal qualifications, we also place great importance on personal maturity, judgment, empathy, ability for self-reflection, and collaboration skills. We recruit BT doctors with the region's future competence supply in focus, and local ties can be an advantage. Furthermore, we see that you are engaged, communicative, have the ability for self-reflection, and possess leadership qualities.

Your Application Should Include:

  • Medical degree certificate
  • Swedish medical license from the National Board of Health and Welfare
  • Language certificate corresponding to C1 level according to CEFR or Swedish high school diploma
  • CV with phone number and current address
  • Personal letter in Swedish
  • Recommendation letters from two workplaces with current references
  • Any necessary work/residence permits
  • Other documented merits (optional)
