The city of Västerås is making a clear commitment to creating safe environments in our public spaces. Do you want to help create places where the residents of Västerås feel welcome, safe, and involved? As a planner, you will have the opportunity to influence the design from idea to inauguration and contribute to shaping environments that make a difference in people's daily lives. The position is a fixed-term employment for approximately 1 year.

Your tasks

As a planner in the design of public spaces, you will work on developing the city's shared places through placemaking, identity-strengthening, and safety-creating activities and seasonal decorations. The assignment involves creating environments that are safe, inclusive, and functional for all residents of Västerås.

In the initial phase, you will primarily work on planning. This means you will prepare budget documentation, lead collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, and develop design ideas based on safety, comfort, and social sustainability. You will analyze existing environments, gather needs, develop design proposals, and ensure that the project is based on solid knowledge and clear goals.

When planning transitions to implementation, you will work more practically. You will follow the project in the environment, coordinate the implementation with relevant stakeholders, and continue to maintain the collaborative work. You will plan and carry out activities to activate the places and contribute to communicating the project's results in a way that creates pride and engagement.

Your qualifications

Working creatively with design energizes you, and you have many ideas on how public environments can be developed. In the creative process, you take a broad perspective and consider the best interests of the entire organization. You are responsible, plan your work well, and drive your tasks independently. Communication and collaboration are important parts of your assignment.

You have an academic education, such as a landscape architect or urban planner, or several years of experience in a similar role. You have knowledge of the design of public spaces, safety-creating and crime prevention work in public spaces, and citizen dialogue or co-creation processes. It is a plus if you also have practical experience in these areas and can work in CAD.

We who work in the Street and Park Unit have the overall responsibility for the city's streets, parks, and natural areas, from planning and construction to operation. The position belongs to the planning department but collaborates closely with the construction and operations departments, which facilitates turning ideas into reality. Here you will work broadly and varied throughout the urban development process, from ongoing planning to influencing issues related to the design of the living environment for the residents of Västerås. You will work with competent colleagues with a wide range of knowledge and expertise, and in close collaboration with your colleague in the same field, you will help shape living environments in the residents' daily lives.
