PhD Position in Political Science
The Department of Political Science is a dynamic and strong educational and research institution at the Faculty of Social Sciences at Stockholm University.
The department's goal is to be nationally leading and internationally prominent in its field.
The department hereby announces a PhD position in political science with an open focus. The position is fully funded for 4 years and is located at the Department of Political Science.

Research Training Subject
The doctoral education in political science aims to provide the student with in-depth knowledge in the subject area, thorough training in research methodology, and good insights into the issues that arise in research and in the practical application of research results. The education should contribute to making the student a critical and independent researcher with the ability to plan and produce scientific reports. The education is divided into a course component (60 credits) and a dissertation component (180 credits). For further information about the structure of the education, see the department's website.
Eligibility Requirements
To be admitted to doctoral education, the applicant must have basic and specific eligibility. The eligibility must be fulfilled by the last application date.
You have basic eligibility if you have completed a degree at the advanced level, or completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits (hp), of which at least 60 hp at the advanced level, or in some other way acquired substantially equivalent knowledge within or outside the country.

- completed higher education corresponding to 150 hp, including at least 60 hp at the advanced level in political science or equivalent
- approved independent work (thesis) of at least 15 higher education credits in the subject of political science
- completed an additional 90 hp in subjects relevant to doctoral education, and
- have knowledge of English equivalent to at least 550 credits on a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
Selection
Selection among applicants is made with regard to the ability to benefit from doctoral education. Criteria used to assess this ability include:
- The quality of previous works written (e.g., theses, articles, and reports): - empirical substance
- independence in planning and analysis
- clear research design, i.e., clear research problem, clear research questions, well-motivated delimitations, explicit theory connection, and methodological awareness.
- Prognosis for completing the dissertation work within the intended time: - Previously demonstrated ability to meet given deadlines
- Problem formulation and stringency in the research plan.

About the Position
We offer a fixed-term position as a PhD student according to Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100). The employment period may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for four years. As a PhD student, you will primarily focus on your own doctoral education, but the position may include work with education, research, and administration to a limited extent (maximum 20%).
A new PhD position is valid for a maximum of one year, and the position is renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
During the first 6 to 12 months of the study period, the admitted PhD student will normally be funded through a tax-free donation scholarship corresponding to the starting salary for PhD students. After this period, the PhD student will receive a PhD position.
The start date is August 31.
