Department of Aquatic Resources

We are looking for an engaged and knowledgeable biologist for the position of researcher at the Coastal Laboratory, SLU Aqua, to contribute to our work in developing and evaluating new fishing gear to reduce the interaction between fishing and marine mammals.

About the job

You will primarily participate in the development of selective and seal-safe fishing gear within small-scale fisheries. You will contribute to data analysis, report writing, and advisory work. You will also maintain a network of collaborating fishermen, researchers, and managers, as well as contribute to fieldwork. Field trials will be conducted in collaboration with professional fishermen along the Swedish coast.

Your background

Good knowledge of coastal ecosystems and fishing is a requirement. You should also have experience in analyzing biological data and report writing, and we expect you to express yourself well in both spoken and written Swedish and English.

Documented experience in development work and fieldwork in aquatic environments is required, as well as a driver's license for passenger cars (B). You should have documented research on the interaction between fishing and our marine mammals, as well as documented experience working in small-scale fisheries (working with coastal fisheries, gear development, or management issues within coastal fisheries). You should also have experience collaborating with professional fishermen.

Documented boat and water experience is an advantage, as well as completed training in maritime safety and/or vessel command class VIII. If you can demonstrate that you are solution-oriented and have the ability to come up with creative ideas and new questions, it is highly meritorious.

Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities such as initiative, teamwork, flexibility, accuracy, and expertise in the subject area, and these should be exemplified in your application.
