Postdoctoral Researcher in Avian Influenza A Virus Transmission
Do you want to work in medical research, supported by competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Do you want an employer that invests in sustainable employment and offers secure, beneficial working conditions? Welcome to apply for a postdoctoral position at Uppsala University.
The Department of Medical Sciences is a large clinical institution with about 250 employees and over 300 affiliated with the Academic Hospital. The department has a broad research profile with strong research groups in various fields. Research takes place in close proximity to clinical activities at the Academic Hospital and includes both fundamental studies on disease causes and the development and evaluation of improved diagnostics and new treatment methods. More about the department's activities can be found at www.medsci.uu.se (http://www.medsci.uu.se).
Job Responsibilities
Recent research has revealed several barriers that limit the transmission and adaptation of avian influenza A virus (IAV). Our group has identified several factors that may contribute to IAV transmission and adaptation to new hosts (PMID: 38127648, PMID: 38127648, PMID: 36934147). We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher with a strong interest in viruses. The focus will be on projects related to the transmission of influenza viruses between species and exploring molecular barriers to the transmission of influenza A virus between species. Such barriers may be (i) virus-related (e.g., mutations or reassortment) or (ii) host-related (e.g., cellular factors).
The work involves practical laboratory work (reverse genetics and single-cell genomics) as well as a significant amount of bioinformatics, such as RNA-seq data analysis. You may become involved in several projects within the research group.
The research group conducts both clinical studies and the development of clinical diagnostics as well as basic research related to pathogens in a One Health context. As a postdoctoral researcher, you will work with a team with diverse scientific backgrounds and interact with and mentor students in the group.
Qualifications
The applicant should have a PhD (or equivalent) in microbiology, with a focus on virus research. Practical experience in microbiological laboratory work involving virus cloning/reverse genetics is expected. Experience in performing single-cell genomics and bioinformatics is advantageous. We value researchers interested in combining experimental and in silico methods in virus research. Fluent English, both spoken and written, is a requirement.
