Project Description

PhD Subject: Technical Mechanics

KTH (https://www.kth.se/tekmek/institutionen-for-teknisk-mekanik-1.1204789) conducts fundamental and applied research in biomechanics, composite mechanics, fluid mechanics, contact mechanics, fracture mechanics, fatigue, material mechanics, and paper mechanics. FLOW (https://www.flow.kth.se/) is a strong community of researchers engaged in fundamental and applied research in fluid mechanics within the department.

We are seeking a PhD candidate in fluid mechanics who will join the research group Bagheri Group (https://www.bagherigroup.com/) within FLOW. The position offers an exciting opportunity for a motivated candidate to contribute to a cutting-edge research project. The project, funded by the Swedish Research Council (VR), aims to understand the fundamental mechanisms that govern the morphology and growth of biofilms in flowing environments. Currently, such understanding is lacking, which limits our ability to predict how quickly biofilms develop under dynamic conditions. This is an important issue in industry, where rapid and efficient removal of biofilm is crucial.

In the project, the PhD candidate will work with a unique experimental platform and combine this with continuum modeling of complex materials and machine learning-based analysis methods to understand and predict the structure and growth of biofilms.

Supervision: Shervin Bagheri is proposed to supervise the PhD candidate. The decision will be made upon admission.

Eligibility for Admission

To be admitted to doctoral education (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility:

  • completed a master's degree, or
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 ECTS credits, of which at least 60 ECTS credits at the master's level, or
  • acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way, either domestically or internationally.

In addition to the above, there is also a requirement (https://www.kth.se/en/studies/phd/admission-requirements-1.520175).
