PhD Position in Organic Nanoelectronics
The research group for organic nanoelectronics, led by Professor Simone Fabiano at the Laboratory of Organic Electronics, Linköping University, is now seeking a motivated PhD candidate for the European Marie Sklodowska-Curie doctoral network FADOS. The candidate will become part of a group of 17 PhD students placed at 16 research groups across Europe and the UK.
About FADOS:
FADOS, Fundamentals and Applications of Doped Organic Semiconductors, is a consortium consisting of eight universities, four research institutes, and four companies from EU countries, the UK, and Switzerland. FADOS aims to achieve targeted modification of semiconductor properties through electronic doping to control and alter their electronic characteristics. The project's purpose is to develop fundamental understanding and innovative manufacturing processes to solve urgent problems in organic electronic components and enable new solutions with sustainable functions. Collaboration with industry partners will strengthen the transfer of research to practical applications.
The 17 PhD candidates recruited for this international project will receive training at the forefront of research and innovation in organic electronics. The network also offers insights into both academic and commercial environments through a balanced exchange program and access to a comprehensive training program that complements scientific skills with personal and entrepreneurial competencies, including communication, career development, intellectual property, and startup financing.
The PhD candidates will form a strong group through participation in seven network-wide events as well as exchanges and collaborations, which will involve travel to several different EU countries.
Your Responsibilities
You will investigate new strategies to control the electronic properties of organic semiconductors through innovative doping mechanisms. The work combines tailored molecular and material design with advanced structural, spectroscopic, and electrochemical methods to understand how ions, charges, and molecular interactions govern doping efficiency and stability. By exploring multiple doping pathways, including chemical, electrochemical, and (photo-)catalytic processes, the project aims to develop versatile and tunable organic semiconductors with enhanced performance. Ultimately, the research will enable new component functionalities and contribute to the development of multimodal, adaptive organic electronic systems.
Your tasks include:
- Exploring new doping strategies to modulate properties of organic semiconductors
- Performing optical/electrical measurements to study charge transport and doping effects
- Implementing the developed materials and processes into functional electronic components
The project includes three exchanges:
- University of Bern (Switzerland) – advanced in-operando spectroscopic techniques
- Molecular Gate (Spain) – advanced methods for imaging doping profiles
- Forschungszentrum Jülich (Germany) – assessment of biocompatibility
The work will be conducted in close collaboration with other members of the FADOS network.
Your Qualifications and Eligibility
We welcome applications from candidates with a master's degree (or equivalent, including those who are about to complete their degree) in materials science, chemistry, physics, or related fields. In addition, the following is required:
- Knowledge of semiconductor materials and/or organic electronics
- Good communication skills and proficiency in English, both spoken and written
- Willingness and ability to travel within the Schengen area, the UK, and beyond for research (including exchanges) as well as conferences and networking activities
- Independence and a strong interest in science and fundamental research
- Ability to work in a team
Desirable:
- Experience in processing and characterizing organic semiconductors
- Knowledge or experience in doping of organic semiconductors
- Knowledge of photochemistry and/or photocatalysis
Your Workplace
The research group for organic nanoelectronics, led by Professor Simone Fabiano at the Laboratory of Organic Electronics, Linköping University, focuses on the fundamentals of chemical and electrochemical doping in organic semiconductors and has contributed to the development of several innovative doping methods. The group also develops multifunctional materials and components that utilize ion-electron coupling for next-generation organic electronics. Our campus is beautifully located by the Motala River in the central parts of Norrköping.
Employment Conditions
Upon employment, you will be admitted to the doctoral program. Read more about each faculty's doctoral education here.
The position is for four years full-time. You will initially be employed for one year, after which the employment may be extended for up to two years depending on progress in the study plan.
Start date February 2026 or by agreement
Salary and Benefits
Our PhD candidates receive a competitive starting salary of 35,300 SEK (approximately 3,100 €).
