Postdoctoral Researcher in Modern History with a Focus on Culture, Crisis, and Preparedness

We harness the power of over 40,000 students and staff. Students who provide hope for the future. Staff who contribute every day to Linköping University tackling contemporary challenges. Our values are based on credibility, trust, and security. By being courageous, thinking freely, and innovating, we create a better future together through both big and small actions. Welcome to apply for a job with us!

We are now seeking at least one postdoctoral researcher in modern history with a focus on culture, crisis, and preparedness.

Your Responsibilities

You will be part of an environment with several research projects on themes related to cultural perspectives on preparedness, crisis, war, and security, as well as media and everyday perceptions of threats and safety. The environment includes modern historical research that is part of a larger national research program on apocalyptic representations, funded by the Riksbankens Jubileumsfond. There is also a project on warning sounds, sirens, and citizen information with historical, media studies, and cultural studies approaches, funded by the Swedish Research Council. We hope that your research will excitingly connect to or expand upon these themes and that your own research line will strengthen and enrich the environment and existing research. You will work in a team with Professor Marie Cronqvist and her research group. A research plan outlining your intended research must be attached to your application. The research plan should be a maximum of five pages including references and should contain the purpose and research questions, a literature review, and a description of planned empirical work as well as theoretical and methodological considerations.

Your Qualifications

To be eligible for the position of postdoctoral researcher, you must have obtained a doctoral degree or have a foreign degree that is deemed equivalent to a doctoral degree. Your degree must be completed by the time the employment decision is made.

It is advantageous if your degree was obtained no more than three years before the application deadline for this position. If there are special reasons, those who obtained their doctoral degree earlier may also be considered, for example, due to various types of statutory leave.

We are looking for someone who has:

  • A doctoral degree in history or another humanities or social science subject.
  • Documented experience working with historical perspectives or cultural heritage issues focusing on the 20th century is a requirement for the position.
  • Knowledge and experience in research concerning the cultural dimensions of preparedness and security from a historical perspective is particularly meritorious.
  • The position requires very good skills in spoken and written English.

It is important that you have a positive attitude and that you combine independence, creativity, initiative, and drive in research with a willingness and ability to collaborate in various forms. Since research administration and/or coordination may be included, we prefer that you are organized and able to work systematically.

Your Workplace

You will work at the Department of History, Art History, and Religious Studies (HKR) at the Institute of Culture and Society (IKOS) located at Campus Valla in Linköping. The department consists of approximately 35 staff members and houses the interdisciplinary research environment in Historical Studies, which also runs its own higher seminar. The research environment at HKR currently has a favorable situation due to a larger donation and is facing several initiatives and an expanding operation, where you will have the opportunity to join and help shape the environment. We look forward to welcoming you!
