Researcher in 3D-Printed Tissue Organoids

The Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University has a broad research profile with strong research groups focused on, among other things, cancer, genetic and autoimmune diseases. One of the core ideas at the department is to stimulate translational research and thereby promote closer collaboration between medical research and healthcare. Research is conducted within six research programs: cancer precision medicine, cancer immunotherapy, genomics and neurobiology, molecular tools and functional genomics, neuro-oncology and neurodegeneration, and vascular biology. Parts of the activities are also integrated with the departments of oncology, clinical genetics, clinical immunology, clinical pathology, and hospital physics at Uppsala Academic Hospital. The department has teaching assignments in several program educations, independent courses, and international master's programs within the Faculty of Medicine. The department has a turnover of approximately 550 million SEK, of which about two-thirds are external research grants. The number of employees is about 400, of which about 100 are doctoral students, and there are a total of over 850 active in the workforce. Job Description

The successful candidate will focus on the development of 3D-printed tissue organoids using a variety of bioinks and stem cell sources. These organoids will include neural and glial cell models, as well as pancreatic islets from humans and mice. A significant part of the research will involve the use of ground-based equipment simulating space conditions, with the overarching goal of optimizing and validating protocols for potential application in real spaceflight experiments.

The ideal candidate should demonstrate a deep commitment to scientific research, a strong sense of responsibility, and a genuine enthusiasm for the project's goals. Additionally, the candidate is expected to show long-term commitment by taking the initiative to secure research funding and grant support, with the aim of establishing an independent research group to promote and expand the project's future directions.

Qualifications

To be considered for this position, applicants must have a PhD or equivalent foreign qualification in neuroscience, biology, biotechnology, or a related discipline. Candidates should demonstrate research expertise in stem cell culture and differentiation of neural stem cells. Experience in culturing pancreatic islets is highly desirable. Familiarity with 3D bioprinting techniques—or a strong interest in acquiring and applying such methods—along with basic engineering skills is essential.

Applicants are also expected to have practical experience in tissue and cell culture techniques, including fixation, cryopreservation, section preparation, immunostaining, imaging, and statistical analysis. The ideal candidate should have excellent communication skills and good proficiency in written and spoken English to facilitate collaboration with international research partners. They should also demonstrate scientific independence, a high level of accountability, and a strong appreciation for teamwork and contributions from other researchers.

Desirable

A demonstrated interest in driving the project forward for future development is crucial, as well as a willingness to travel internationally for research.
