The emergency department in Skövde handles all types of acute medical conditions and trauma in patients of all ages.

With over 60,000 visits annually, we are one of the largest emergency departments in the country, and after moving into completely new facilities in November 2023, we are also one of Sweden's most modern. The department has designated areas for children aged 0-18 regardless of the reason for seeking care, which aligns with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The area of operation also includes ambulance services and SkaS mobile primary care teams. This offers a unique opportunity to work with emergency care across a broad spectrum of illnesses in an organization with a cohesive emergency care chain.

Description

We are looking for someone who wants to be a vital building block in our emergency physician clinic, which was established in 2017. Currently, we have ten residents and three specialists in emergency medicine, as well as one specialist in internal medicine. Our long-term goal is to closely collaborate with other clinics in the hospital to replace the current specialty-bound on-call lines in the emergency department with a fully developed emergency physician service and build a top-class emergency care chain. The fact that the clinic is relatively young gives you a unique opportunity to be part of shaping your future workplace. We place great importance on creating a good working environment and working conditions that allow for a balance between work and leisure. The goal is for those who wish to work an entire career as an emergency physician.

We usually start the employment with a temporary position of 3-6 months as a licensed junior physician, where the planning of courses and the introduction is intended as the beginning of your residency. If the initial period works well for both parties, the employment will be extended to a permanent position as a resident, and all time you have worked with us will count towards your residency.

After the introduction to the hospital and the emergency department, you will start working in our emergency physician team, managing patients with mixed reasons for seeking care under the supervision of your emergency physician colleagues and other primary and backup on-call specialists within the specialty-bound on-call lines. The emergency department is currently staffed every weekday with an emergency physician specialist or a resident in emergency medicine in the role of lead physician, which provides security and support, especially early in your career. You will be assigned a personal supervisor with whom you will have regular guidance.

With increased experience, you will take on more responsibility for emergency patients and be introduced to the role of primary on-call for the other teams, starting with the medical emergency team. As you become established in your role as an emergency physician, you will also participate in the supervision and teaching of medical students, interns, and residents. You will of course participate in the clinic's internal training together with our residents and attend external courses in emergency management.

Our residency training follows a structured educational material with both practical and theoretical content linked to the goal descriptions from the Swedish Society for Emergency Medicine (SWESEM). During your residency, you will work throughout the emergency department with patients of all ages and all reasons for seeking care.

Who are we looking for

We are looking for a licensed physician. As a person, you are attracted to teamwork, emergency management, differential diagnostic reasoning, varied tasks, and at times a fast pace. You are humble about your own competence and its limitations and understand the importance of asking for help when faced with situations you are not used to handling. We would like you to be involved in developing the operations and creating good routines and pathways for collaboration between emergency care, inpatient care, and primary care. You have good communication skills, can improvise, and enjoy interacting with different people.

The area of operation has an active collaboration with the hospital's research and development unit, which may provide opportunities to combine work as an emergency physician with research or development projects in the field.

Previous experience in emergency care or pre-hospital work is an advantage. Personal suitability is highly valued. Prior to employment, standard checks against suspicion and criminal records, as well as with the Health and Social Care Inspectorate (IVO) and the National Board of Health and Welfare, will be conducted.

In the case of recruiting physicians with foreign licenses/specialist certificates, the position will be preceded by a process to meet the requirements for Swedish licenses/specialist certificates.
