Computational Engineer in Defense and Security
FOI, the Total Defense Research Institute, is one of Europe's leading institutes for applied research in defense and security. FOI is an authority under the Ministry of Defense, tasked with conducting research, method and technology development, and investigations for total defense, as well as supporting disarmament, non-proliferation, and international security. Our activities are primarily conducted on behalf of the Government Offices, the Armed Forces, the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), and the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB). At FOI, we have approximately 1400 employees, of which more than 1000 work directly with research and development. Our competencies span the entire field from natural sciences and technology to social and political sciences.
Are you interested in using your computational skills to simulate weapon effects and protection against them? Then FOI could be your new workplace! With us, you will have the chance to work on some of the most challenging and exciting technical problems in defense and security! We also offer a work-life balance, a developing work environment, and a socially important job!
About the Position
In the work of developing next-generation warheads and protection, advanced calculations and understanding of the underlying physics are crucial. You will be involved in combining experimental research with computational models to study extremely fast processes where large deformations and high strain rates occur – i.e., processes where materials are subjected to extreme stresses.
Depending on your background, your tasks may vary, but they include:
- Setting up models, conducting simulations, and analyzing results using finite element methods
- Linking computational data to experimental results and physical reality
- Participating in cross-functional project teams and contributing to idea exchange and solutions
You will work in a dynamic and collaborative environment, where you can use your technical expertise in computational methods while also being part of practical and exciting experimental work.
About the Department
You will be part of one of the research units in the department of Weapons, Protection, and Security located in Stockholm-Grindsjön. Within our research area, we contribute to national expertise on explosives, weapon effects, and protection. Our work spans several technical areas and includes both experiments and evaluations of complex weapon and protection systems. We strive to offer an attractive work environment where everyone, regardless of background, feels welcome and can contribute with their perspectives and ideas. We have good public transport connections with Tumba, Västerhaninge, and Ösmo/Nynäshamn, making it easy to commute to and from the workplace.
Please read more about what the department does here: Weapons, Protection, and Security (https://www.foi.se/jobba-hos-oss.html).
Do You Have the Competence Profile We Need?
Requirements
We are looking for someone who has:
- At least a Master's degree or equivalent in a relevant field for the position.
- A basic experience of FEM, preferably in mechanics and materials science.

You thrive in a project-oriented and cross-functional work environment where collaboration and creative thinking are key to success. We place great importance on your personal qualities, such as initiative, willingness to cooperate, and a drive that leads you to be goal and results-oriented. Since reporting and dialogue with clients are conducted in Swedish, good knowledge of Swedish, both spoken and written, is required.
What Do We Offer You?
