Pharmaceutical Sciences at AstraZeneca deliver the therapies of the future through scientific leadership in drug delivery, design of synthetic routes, and manufacturing of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API) and drug products. Our portfolio of projects spans small molecules, peptides, oligonucleotides to RNA-based therapeutics across AstraZeneca's therapy areas. Sciences with a mission to provide novel products to AstraZeneca's clinical pipeline.

We are now looking for a dedicated, motivated and experienced CMC Project Lead to join our CVRM CMC project leadership team. The role is in Gothenburg, Sweden.

What You'll do

The CMC Project Lead is a key leadership position within the Pharmaceutical Sciences function, delivering a rich portfolio comprising an exciting mixture of small molecules and new modalities.

The selected candidate will be accountable for leadership, strategy & planning, delivery and budget management for the CMC contribution to a small portfolio of projects prior to proof-of-concept results. You are encouraged to take a holistic view of CMC activities as well as a solid understanding of other scientific disciplines in R&D (Research & Development) and deliver innovative and differentiated strategies that balance scientific risks against return on investment. You will lead 2-6 projects depending on complexity and the stage of development.

You'll work positively across the wider CMC organisation and will direct, encourage and empower Pharmaceutical Project Teams providing focus and direction. You will be accountable to the early Global Project Team (eGPT) for maintaining and delivering all aspects of the CMC plan to scope, time, cost and quality. You'll be a proactive and engaged member of the eGPT with the credibility and influence to share the development of overall project strategies. You will also act as an external ambassador for Pharmaceutical Sciences and represent Pharmaceutical Sciences on the evaluation of external project opportunities (eg Due Diligence).

This is an important role, giving you a chance to influence R&D science, portfolio strategies and product development, and contribute to the success of AstraZeneca's portfolio. You will report to the Pharmaceutical Sciences Head of CVRM CMC project leadership.

Essential Skills/Experience

  • Advanced degree in science in relevant scientific field
  • Significant experience of working within a CMC organisation and insight into how CMC contributes to the wider medicine development process
  • Global drug development experience
  • Experience of project management/leadership in a large and complex business environment, preferably within an international environment and experience of working with external partners
  • Proven track record in all aspects of creating and leading large scientific, multi-disciplinary hard-working teams, such as: excellent communication skills, strong business acumen and creative problem-solving capabilities, ability to analyze and interpret complex situations to provide clear strategic directions for others
  • Results-focus and ability to deliver projects through strategic influence and relationship management versus direct line management
  • Excellent negotiation, collaborator management and influencing skills
