The institute has about 50 employees and approximately 1500 students per academic year. More information about us can be found on our website (https://www.su.se/institutionen-for-slaviska-och-baltiska-sprak-finska-nederlandska-och-tyska/).
Subject/Subject Description
The teaching within the Department of Finnish is focused on the Finnish language in Finland and Sweden, as well as on Finnish and Sweden-Finnish literature and culture, along with didactic perspectives in these areas. Teaching in Finnish is provided from basic level to doctoral level. The main research areas within the department include Finnish as a minority language, Sweden-Finnish and Sweden-Finnish culture, Finnish as part of multilingualism in schools and literature, language and literature didactics, sociolinguistics, Finnish political discourse, and corpus linguistics.
Job Responsibilities
The job responsibilities mainly include teaching Finnish as a foreign language at the basic level, with a particular focus on oral and written language skills. Teaching in courses intended for Finnish-speaking students and future teachers may also be included. In addition to teaching and examination, course development and the creation of teaching materials are also part of the role. Teaching primarily takes place in the evenings and much of it is conducted digitally via Zoom, but on-campus teaching also occurs. Administrative tasks, study guidance, contacts with schools, and organizing various events are also included in the responsibilities. The applicant should be prepared to take on coordinating roles in various projects and events within the department. The ability to effectively communicate with different stakeholders, both within and outside the university, is therefore of great importance.
Eligibility Requirements
Eligible for employment as a lecturer in Finnish is someone who has obtained a master's degree in Finnish, Finnish literature, pedagogy (with a focus on Finnish), or equivalent before the application deadline. The applicant must have documented teaching experience in Finnish at the university level, primary school, and/or high school. Excellent knowledge of Finnish and Swedish, both spoken and written, as well as a very good ability to teach in Finnish, are requirements.
Assessment Criteria
In assessing the applicants, special emphasis will be placed on pedagogical skill and experience in teaching Finnish as a foreign language, heritage language, and/or second language as well as mother tongue. The pedagogical skill should be well documented, for example, through a portfolio or in another way that allows for the assessment of the quality of the applicant's individual pedagogical experience and knowledge.
Particular emphasis is placed on the ability to teach in Finnish and Swedish. The ability to develop and implement teaching in oral and written language skills is central.
Great importance is placed on a broad competence in the Finnish language and its use in various contexts, as well as experience in developing teaching materials for courses (also in digital educational environments). Experience working with digital tools and platforms in language teaching is therefore highly valued.
Great importance is also placed on documented ability to collaborate with colleagues and contribute to a good working environment.
Importance is placed on experience in administrative tasks within the education system, such as study guidance or support for exchange students. In addition to teaching tasks, it is important that the applicant has the ability and interest in various administrative tasks within the department and the institute. This may include, among other things, support for exchange students, study guidance within the Department of Finnish, and participation in the institute's quality work.
Knowledge of Finnish as a national minority language in Sweden is meritorious.
Other valuable merits include a Finnish or Swedish teacher's degree and experience in distance education, knowledge of work with the revitalization of national minority languages, as well as experience in administrative tasks within the education system.
Experience and interest in organizing events, such as language cafes for students or professional development days for practicing teachers in Finnish, is seen as an additional merit.
Meritorious is higher education pedagogical training of at least 15 credits or equivalent knowledge acquired in another way. Applicants who lack higher education pedagogical training and who are not deemed to have acquired equivalent knowledge in another way are encouraged to undergo such training during the first two years of employment.
