Postdoctoral Researcher in Material Physics at Uppsala University
Uppsala University hereby announces a position for a postdoctoral researcher in material physics at the Department of Physics and Astronomy.
The research conducted at the Department of Physics and Astronomy covers a wide range of physics subjects, distributed across nine divisions. The department is located in the Ångström Laboratory and employs nearly 400 people, of which about 100 are doctoral students. It offers a broad physics curriculum for students and doctoral candidates, participation in nationally and internationally leading projects for researchers, and opportunities for partnerships with industry and various outreach activities.

The research in Material Physics at Uppsala University focuses on understanding how the structure and composition of materials relate to physical properties across multiple length scales – from the atomic level to the macroscopic. Core areas include magnetic materials, hydrogen, energy materials, soft materials, and the interaction between ions and solids.

Job Responsibilities
The project where the postdoctoral researcher will work involves experimental studies of candidate materials and heterostructures for magneto-ionic applications based on amorphous compounds of rare earth metals and transition metals. The research work will include thin film deposition, structural characterization, static and dynamic magnetic characterization, studies of characteristic transport and/or magnetization properties, as well as the effect of ions on the magnetic properties. The laboratory resources available to the Material Physics Department enable the entire chain of experiments to be conducted in Uppsala, except for techniques requiring synchrotron light or neutron scattering, which necessitate travel to larger facilities in Sweden and abroad. The position may involve responsibility for maintaining experimental setups in the laboratories, as well as supervising, for example, thesis projects of undergraduate or master's students. Teaching in courses may be included to a limited extent.
Qualifications
A PhD in physics or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a PhD in physics. The degree must be completed by the time the employment decision is made. Preference should be given to those who have obtained their degree no more than three years ago. In calculating the three-year time frame, the deadline for applications is the starting point. If there are special reasons, such a degree may have been obtained earlier. Special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, or elected positions within trade unions, etc.
Extensive experience in independently using experimental techniques for ultra-high vacuum-based thin film deposition (e.g., magnetron sputtering), structural characterization (e.g., X-ray diffraction), and magneto-optical characterization methods, including domain imaging, is required. Excellent ability to communicate in spoken and written English is required, as well as good ability to analyze and present measurement data.
Desirable/meritorious
Experience in micromagnetic simulations, magnetometry with SQUID or VSM, ion implantation, chemical analysis with ion beam methods, and studies of material systems relevant to applications in spintronics are considered meritorious.
About the Position
The position is temporary for 2 years according to the central collective agreement. The extent is full-time. Start date is 2025-09-01 or by agreement. Location: Uppsala
