Aerodynamic Engineer at FOI

FOI, the Total Defence Research Institute, is one of Europe's leading institutes for applied research in defense and security. FOI is an authority under the Ministry of Defence, tasked with conducting research, method and technology development, and investigations to support total defense, disarmament, non-proliferation, and international security. Our activities are primarily commissioned by the Government Offices, the Armed Forces, the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), and the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB). At FOI, we have about 1400 employees, of which over 1000 work directly with research and development. Our competencies span the entire field from natural sciences and engineering to social and political sciences.

Do you want to work on exciting projects with technology for defense and security? Can you analyze complex systems and understand the essentials? Do you understand the connection between today's technological developments and future applications? Then FOI could be your new workplace! We offer a balanced work life, a developing work environment, and a socially important job!

About the Position

As an aerodynamic engineer with us, you will work on studies, evaluations, and modeling of flying vehicles. Applications include performance assessments, such as maneuverability and range for missiles, and outer ballistic calculations for firearms. You will also work on research related to control systems for missiles and aircraft.

You will become part of a research group where scientific methodology permeates the work, which takes place both individually and in groups. You have a broad technical interest and understand how different subsystems interact and contribute to a system's performance. In addition to working with your own group, we collaborate closely with other groups within FOI, other defense authorities, and in international collaborations.

About the Unit

You will be part of the Guided Weapons unit, which belongs to the Defense Technology department in Kista. Feel free to read more about what we do: https://foi.se/om-foi/organisation/forsvarsteknik.html (https://foi.se/om-foi/organisation/forsvarsteknik.html).

In the unit, we conduct research on guidance, navigation, and vehicle dynamics. We work on studies, analyses, and evaluations, primarily of weapon systems. Applications range from modeling and simulation of hypersonic weapons to developing alternative methods for navigation. The unit's work aims to analyze the performance and capabilities of today's systems and to develop and evaluate new concepts for future defense.

Do You Have the Competence Profile We Need?

We are looking for someone with:

  • a master's degree in engineering or equivalent in fields such as aerospace engineering, systems theory, control engineering, or applied mathematics
  • the ability to communicate clearly and concisely in both spoken and written form, in Swedish as well as in English.

We seek a person who enjoys working both independently and in a team, and who has good collaboration skills. We appreciate initiative and goal-oriented results. Furthermore, you have strong analytical skills and find it easy to translate theory into practice and to contextualize problems. You have a developed ability to quickly acquire new information and to familiarize yourself with new areas. We place great importance on your personal qualities.

It is an advantage if you have:

  • practical and theoretical experience in aerodynamics, control engineering, and software development in object-oriented programming languages
  • experience with weapon-related issues from, for example, the Armed Forces, FMV, or the defense industry
  • experience in project management of technical projects.

What Do We Offer You?

The Total Defence Research Institute (FOI) is a government agency conducting world-leading research in defense and security to support Sweden's military and civil defense. We offer a unique workplace where you can work on what is important for total defense and society as a whole. The research is applied both within defense authorities and with civilian actors and plays a crucial role in building a relevant and effective defense capability.

We consciously work for a good work environment with a good balance between work and private life. In addition, we offer a range of benefits. Read more about what it is like to work with us: https://www.foi.se/jobba-hos-oss.html (https://www.foi.se/jobba-hos-oss.html)
