Subject Description

Ergonomics is an interdisciplinary research and application area that, from a holistic perspective, addresses the interaction between humans, technology, and organization in order to optimize health and well-being as well as performance in the design of products and work systems. Load ergonomics includes research on how work can impair musculoskeletal health, how risk assessment methods can be designed for high usability, and how interventions to reduce risks and improve health can be developed and tested.

Job Responsibilities

The job responsibilities include initiating and driving research activities, including supervision, within the subject area, primarily involving the development of methods for load ergonomic prevention, which may also include the prevention of workplace accidents. Projects are often carried out in collaboration with companies or other organizations and may be based on data collection in the field as well as simulation and data collection in the laboratory. Computer simulations may also be included.

The job responsibilities also include teaching and program and course development within the department's master's program, lifelong learning courses; including, for example, physical and organizational work environment development and scientific methodology.

The assistant professor will be given the opportunity to develop their independence as a researcher and gain qualifications that can provide eligibility for another teaching position that has higher qualification requirements (see Chapter 4, Section 12 a of the Higher Education Ordinance). The assistant professor may apply for promotion to associate professor in accordance with Chapter 4, Section 12 c of the Higher Education Ordinance.

Eligibility

Eligible for appointment as an assistant professor is someone who has obtained a doctoral degree or has equivalent scientific competence. Primarily, the candidate should have obtained a doctoral degree or reached equivalent competence no more than seven years before the application period for the position as assistant professor has expired. However, those who have obtained a doctoral degree or achieved equivalent competence earlier may also be considered if there are special reasons. Special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, or other similar circumstances.

Assessment Criteria

The assessment criteria for employment as an assistant professor at KTH are the criteria specified in Section 1.3 of KTH's employment regulations in relation to the established employment profile.

It is of utmost importance that the applicant has demonstrated:

  • scientific competence evidenced by scientific publications, conference participation, participation in research collaborations, and other commitments in the scientific community such as peer review or expert assignments.
  • potential for qualification for higher teaching positions. This includes potential for independent development as a researcher and teacher within the relevant subject area as well as the ability to establish, renew, and develop the relevant research area.

It is of secondary importance that the applicant has demonstrated:

  • experience of postdoctoral research in a different research environment than the institution where the applicant obtained their doctorate. Experience from research and development work within industry or other organizations may be assessed as equivalent to a traditional postdoctoral position at another institution.
  • interest in and insights regarding pedagogical development within the relevant subject area.
  • interest in and insights regarding leadership in academia, collaboration with the surrounding society, and awareness of diversity and equal treatment issues with a particular focus on gender equality.

It is also of significance that the applicant has demonstrated:

  • administrative skills.

Special Assessment Criteria for Promotion to Associate Professor

When assessing applications for promotion to associate professor, the provisions of Section 1.2.4 of KTH's Employment Regulations will apply. The ability to teach in Swedish is a merit that is given great importance when applying for promotion.

Temporary until: The position is permanent, but for a maximum of six years, and can be renewed if additional time is required to achieve the purpose of the appointment due to the teacher's sick leave, parental leave, or other special reasons. However, the total employment period may not exceed eight years. The position is part of the Tenure Track system at KTH, and the assistant professor will be assessed for promotion to associate professor after application.
