ICOS Carbon Portal (CP) is the data center of the international research infrastructure International Carbon Observation System (ICOS).

ICOS produces long-term high-quality measurements of greenhouse gas exchanges in the areas of the atmosphere, ecosystems, and oceans. CP develops web services that support the use of data in research. CP is located at the Department of Physical Geography and Ecosystem Science, Lund University.

ICOS is a strongly distributed research infrastructure that requires coordination and continuous development. Further development of technology and observation strategies is a strategic goal for ICOS, often supported through projects funded by the European Commission. Over the years, ICOS has participated in and led many EU projects. All these projects support the development of ICOS, its scientific objectives, and the development of CP as a FAIR data repository and collaboration platform.

We are looking for an experienced back-end developer to join our small team working on services for storing and providing access to open data. You will be able to work on a variety of tasks depending on your skills, interests, and the needs of the team. The ideal candidate is comfortable managing self-hosted web services, has strong experience with statically typed languages, and is familiar with functional programming concepts.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable and efficient applications using Scala 3 in an open-source environment. Our main repositories are https://github.com/ICOS-Carbon-Portal/data (https://github.com/ICOS-Carbon-Portal/data) and https://github.com/ICOS-Carbon-Portal/meta (https://github.com/ICOS-Carbon-Portal/meta).
  • Work with and extend our data models and triplestore database using RDF, OWL, and SPARQL. Previous experience is an advantage but not a requirement.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues in production and development environments.
  • Contribute to code reviews, participate in team discussions, improve technical documentation, and mentor colleagues as needed.

Requirements

  • Several years of work experience in backend development with statically typed languages.
  • Knowledge of functional programming.
  • Good knowledge of Linux and Git.
  • Ability to write clear and effective documentation.
  • Fluent in English, both spoken and written.

Conditions

This is a permanent position at 100% with a desired start date of May 1, 2025, or by agreement. A probationary period may apply.

The advertised position will be located at the Department of Physical Geography and Ecosystem Science within the Faculty of Science in 2025, and will be transferred to the newly established Department of Environmental and Geological Sciences within the same faculty starting January 1, 2026.

By bringing together previous activities from the Centre for Environmental and Climate Science, the Department of Physical Geography and Ecosystem Science, and the Geological Institute, the new department will strengthen the connection between different research fields, develop new educational programs, and promote collaboration with society.

The Faculty of Science conducts research and education in biology, astronomy, physics, geosciences, chemistry, mathematics, and environmental science. The activities are conducted at eight departments gathered within the northern university area. The faculty has about 1,500 students, 330 doctoral students, and 700 employees.
