Postdoctoral Researcher in Health Economics at Uppsala University

The Centre for Health Economic Research at Uppsala University is seeking 1–2 high-quality candidates for a postdoctoral position in health economics at the Department of Medical Sciences.

The Centre for Health Economic Research at Uppsala University is an interdisciplinary research centre aimed at efficient resource use in healthcare and improved health in the population.

For example, developing methods to evaluate effectiveness and cost-effectiveness in everyday clinical practice of medical interventions and other interventions in healthcare, and increasing the understanding of why effectiveness in everyday clinical practice may differ from effects in randomized controlled trials; developing models for reimbursement and pricing of healthcare and pharmaceuticals to meet challenges from new types of medical innovations or demand for new types of evidence; understanding inequalities in health and access to healthcare, and how organization and resource constraints in healthcare affect the quality of care. The Centre is a collaboration between the Subject Area of Medicine and Pharmacy and the Faculty of Social Sciences and is based on a multidisciplinary perspective where different competencies are combined. The research benefits from each other's expertise, a common perspective on experimental and quasi-experimental research design, and experience in using large registry data.

Job Responsibilities

As a postdoctoral researcher, you will independently conduct high-quality research that highlights important issues in health economics.

You will contribute to research design for health economic studies; methods to evaluate effects of interventions in healthcare (including medical innovations or health shocks) using observational data and exploit exogenous components in the assignment of treatment; and understanding how economic conditions (including incentives) affect health outcomes.

You will also contribute methodological support in health economics, comparative effectiveness, and causal inference in non-experimental contexts to research projects or grant applications from researchers at Uppsala University.

As a postdoctoral researcher, you are expected to collaborate with other researchers at the Centre for Health Economic Research and with other partners, as well as contribute to creating a collaborative and stimulating research environment.

Qualifications

For the position of postdoctoral researcher, you must have a PhD, or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, in a subject relevant to the position.

Primarily, candidates who have obtained their degree within the last three years will be considered. When calculating the three-year time frame, the deadline for applications is the starting point. If there are special reasons, such a degree may have been obtained earlier. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, or trust assignments within trade unions, etc.

You must have documented experience in using microdata econometric methods to evaluate effects of interventions and policies in non-experimental contexts; or analyzing how economic conditions affect health outcomes.

You must have excellent oral and written skills in English.

Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability, such as having good collaboration skills, being results-oriented, responsible, solution-focused, and resilient under stress.

Desirable/meritorious

As a successful candidate, you have experience in planning and conducting high-quality research in a structured and methodologically balanced way, as well as communicating effectively both within and outside academia.

Experience related to the research program here (https://www.rj.se/en/grants/2024/are-cities-creating-or-attracting-healthy-individuals-causality-and-selection-in-urban-health/) is valuable.

About the Position

The position is temporary for at least two years and at most three years according to central collective agreements.

The position is 100% with a start date of July 1, 2025, or by agreement. The position is located at the Department of Medical Sciences, with the main workplace in the premises of the Centre for Health Economic Research.
