Research Position in Protein-Semiconductor and Protein-Metal Hybrid Structures
Lund University was founded in 1666 and is consistently ranked as one of the world’s leading universities. It has around 47,000 students and more than 8,800 staff in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö. We unite in our effort to understand, explain, and improve our world and the conditions of people.
Lund University welcomes applicants from diverse backgrounds and experiences. Equality, equal opportunities, and diversity are fundamental principles for all parts of our operations.
Workplace Description
The position is linked to the Department of Condensed Matter Physics at the Physics Institution, a department with about 100 employees where extensive research is conducted focused on various aspects of nanophysics, ranging from materials science to bio- and quantum physics with various applications.
The department is a central part of NanoLund, which is Lund University’s large interdisciplinary research center for nanoscience and nanotechnology.
A significant portion of the research in the department is in the field of nanobiotechnology, where we develop new methods to investigate biological systems or to utilize biomolecules in nanocomponents. The department leads a project aimed at combining “hard” nanofabrication techniques with the rich functionality and versatility of “soft” protein design, offering great opportunities. Proteins have long been considered too complex and unpredictable to be used for engineering purposes, but this is rapidly changing, and the project is at the international forefront of this development.

Job Responsibilities
We intend to hire a temporary researcher who will initiate the design, fabrication, and characterization of protein-semiconductor or protein-metal hybrid structures. The tasks include computer-based design of proteins that can promote the crystallization of specific semiconductors or metals, their fabrication, and optical or electro-optical characterization. The job responsibilities also include evaluating the innovation and application potential of the research results.
Additionally, there is an opportunity to collaborate on other projects within the group, for example, regarding the detection of biomolecules or artificial protein motors.
The main responsibility as a researcher is to conduct research. You will work closely with postdoctoral researchers and PhD students, thus providing an opportunity to gain experience as a supervisor. Teaching may also be included in the job responsibilities, but no more than one-fifth of the working time. Within the framework of the position, there is an opportunity for three weeks of higher education pedagogical training. The purpose of the position is to develop independence as a researcher and create conditions for further qualification.
Qualifications
Eligible for employment as a researcher is one who has obtained a doctoral degree.
Requirements for the position are:
- You have a doctoral degree or an equivalent research education in the subject area of the position.
- You have experience in the design and expression of proteins and protein-semiconductor or protein-metal hybrid structures.
- You have excellent oral and written skills in English.
- You have a good ability to work independently and good collaboration skills.
Meriting for the position is:
- Experience in method development for computer-based protein design.
Consideration will also be given to good collaboration skills, drive, and independence, as well as how your experience and competence complement and strengthen the ongoing research at the institution and how you can contribute to its future development.
We Offer
You will be part of a research team within NanoLund, an internationally renowned research center that offers good career development, an open and inclusive research environment, and access to first-class laboratories and equipment for characterization, nanofabrication, and modeling.
Lund University is a government authority, which means you receive special benefits, generous vacation, and a favorable occupational pension. Read more on the university's website about https://www.lu.se/om-universitetet/jobba-hos-oss (https://www.lu.se/om-universitetet/jobba-hos-oss).
