Lund University is looking for a historian with a doctoral degree

There are around 47,000 students and more than 8,800 employees in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö. We are united in our effort to understand, explain, and improve our world and the conditions of people.
Lund University welcomes applicants from diverse backgrounds and experiences. Gender equality, equal opportunities, and diversity are fundamental principles for all parts of our operations.
We are looking for a historian holding a doctoral degree and specializing in Middle Eastern history who is at the beginning of their career.
Workplace and Subject
The successful candidate will divide their time between the Department of History and the Centre for Advanced Middle Eastern Studies.
The Department of History has three divisions: History, Human Rights Studies, and East and South-East Asian Studies. The position is in the History division, which has about 60 teaching staff and researchers and is the center for the National Graduate School of Historical Studies. Research at the division includes cultural history, history of knowledge, and global history, and moves chronologically from the late Middle Ages to the present day.
The Centre for Advanced Middle Eastern Studies (CMES) supports, coordinates, and expands interdisciplinary research on the Middle East at Lund University.
The position is linked to the strategic research area The Middle East in the Contemporary World (MECW) coordinated by Professor Karin Aggestam and Professor Ronny Berndtsson at CMES. The research area includes more than 30 researchers from four different faculties at Lund University and is coordinated by CMES. The MECW programme is organized into four research themes: 1) Environment and sustainable development; 2) Security and sustainable peace; 3) Democratisation, migration, and sustainable socio-economic development; and 4) Religion, identity, and culture.
What We Offer
As Associate Senior Lecturer, you will develop your qualifications and may then be promoted to permanent employment as a senior lecturer. As part of your appointment, you will be offered a mentor and five weeks of training in teaching and learning in higher education.
We support you in your move to Sweden and give you the opportunity to learn Swedish through the University’s Swedish language courses for new international staff. If you have a family, they will find new contacts and support through Lund’s International Citizen Hub.
Lund University is a public authority which means that you receive special benefits, generous annual leave, and a favorable occupational pension. The University applies individual salary-setting. Read more about being employed at Lund University here: Work at Lund University (https://www.lu.se/work-at-lund-university).
Job Duties
The successful candidate will mainly carry out independent research linked to the overarching theme of the MECW and choose research questions, develop theoretical ideas, and apply the most appropriate research methods. The successful candidate will also be expected to provide high-quality teaching at all levels of history and to take an active part in the research and educational development of the Department of History.
The successful candidate will also be expected to learn Swedish at a level required to perform common duties in research and education.
Qualifications for Employment as an Associate Senior Lecturer
You hold a doctoral degree or have corresponding research expertise in history that is of value in view of the subject matter of the position and the duties that it will involve. We will primarily prioritize those applicants who have been awarded a doctoral degree after May 18, 2018. If there are documented special grounds, such as parental leave, military service, or illness, after graduating that have prevented you from working as a researcher, the doctoral degree in the subject can in such cases have been awarded earlier.
Requirements
A good ability to initiate, develop, and implement high-quality research as demonstrated by:
- the ability to teach and publish in English
- research qualifications and professional development in historical research and research on Middle Eastern history, as assessed on the basis of submitted publications
- the ability to independently plan, develop, and conduct high-quality research in collaboration with other researchers in national and international contexts
- the ability to contribute to the overarching objectives of the MECW research programme: to conduct groundbreaking research and undertake external engagement that promotes multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives, approaches, and methodologies related to the Middle East.
The ability to collaborate
Teaching ability
In addition to the above requirements, it is desirable if you have the ability to obtain competitive research funding.
