Research Assistant in Environmental Science
The Department of Environmental Science is one of the larger departments within the Faculty of Science.
The department consists of four units with over 170 employees including researchers, teachers, doctoral students, and technical/administrative staff from more than 30 different countries. Research and teaching are conducted in environmental chemistry, atmospheric science, biogeochemistry, and ecotoxicology. As a staff member at the Department of Environmental Science, you will be part of a dynamic environment with world-class research and a strong international character. More information about us can be found at: https://www.su.se/department-of-environmental-science/ (https://www.su.se/department-of-environmental-science/).
Job Responsibilities
We are looking for a research assistant for a project investigating pet exposure to environmental pollutants and links to health. The project position includes method development, optimization on high-resolution instruments, and data analysis. Since many of these chemicals are present in products around us, it is essential to work without introducing background contamination during sample processing. This involves identifying sources of contamination and being able to address them, such as distilling solvents, etc. The chemical analysis is performed using complementary gas (GC) and liquid chromatography (LC) connected to a Q Exactive Orbitrap (Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc) mass spectrometer (MS), and both targeted and suspect analysis should be performed, quantified, and reported. Primarily per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) will be analyzed, but also other endocrine-disrupting chemicals, such as bisphenols, UV filters, and synthetic antioxidants.
Qualifications
We are looking for someone with a PhD in environmental science, focusing on environmental chemistry or a related field. You should also have solid laboratory knowledge, including the ability to work cleanly to avoid contamination of samples. Experience with GC and LC-MS is required, as well as processing and interpreting generated data. You need to be meticulous, organized, and have documented experience writing scientific articles. We also wish for you to have knowledge and understanding of PFAS substances, the various structures, and the abbreviations used.
About the Position
The position is full-time and temporary for six months. Stockholm University applies individual salary setting. Start date according to agreement.
