Software Developer
Umeå University and SciLifeLab are looking for a software developer to work within a newly established unit at SciLifeLab, the Training Hub.
SciLifeLab, Science for Life Laboratory, is a national center for molecular biosciences in Sweden, developing and maintaining unique research infrastructure, services, and data resources for life science research. SciLifeLab's main goal is to enable groundbreaking, multidisciplinary research and promote the application of research for the benefit of society. Approximately 200 research groups, 1,500 researchers, and 40 national infrastructure units are connected to SciLifeLab at all major Swedish universities.
The Training Hub is a new initiative from SciLifeLab responsible for providing education, services, support, and resources for technology- and data-driven lifelong learning. Our mission is national, and the vision is to enable SciLifeLab to offer Swedish research high-quality and openly accessible learning, for example in the form of courses, materials, and other types of lifelong learning. The Training Hub collaborates closely with various national and international research infrastructures and organizations.
Your Future Workplace
The Department of Physiological Botany is part of Umeå Plant Science Centre with approximately 200 employees, including 40 group leaders, representing currently 48 different nationalities (for more information, see http://www.upsc.se (http://www.upsc.se) or http://www.plantphys.umu.se/english/ (http://www.plantphys.umu.se/english/)). Our main activities are academic research and education covering areas such as ecology, biochemistry, plant physiology, and genomics.
SciLifeLab Training Hub (TH) is responsible for providing support to SciLifeLab's ecosystem regarding education. This position is located in Umeå, but as we work distributed across Sweden and you will have colleagues throughout the country, much of our work is conducted via Zoom/Slack/online. SciLifeLab Training Hub has Stockholm University as the host university, with headquarters at SciLifeLab Solna.
Main Responsibilities
As a Software Developer at the Training Hub, you will work on building our national training portal. This portal will be able to gather training information and materials from the entire life science community, as well as offer support systems for educators.
The main tasks as a software developer include:
- Development of our registration system
- Design and development of our registration system
- Deployment, maintenance, and support of our systems
- Identifying workflows and new systems best suited for specific needs
- Integrating existing and new systems
Qualifications
The position requires a university degree in computer science, information technology, bioinformatics, or a related field relevant to the position, or documented experience that can be assessed as equivalent.
- Experience in Linux-based environments
- Good knowledge of Python
- Good knowledge of database modeling
- Excellent communication skills in English
Desirable Qualifications
- Knowledge of Ruby programming
- Experience in both frontend and backend development, with a greater emphasis on backend
- Experience with container-based systems, such as Docker
- Experience with version control systems, e.g., Git
- Interest in education and/or OPEN and FAIR
- Experience working in a research environment and/or research infrastructure environment
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with colleagues across different fields
Employment Type
The position is full-time and permanent. A probationary period of up to 6 months may apply. Start date as soon as possible or by agreement.
