Department Head for Infrastructure Department

VTI conducts applied research and qualified investigations in the transport sector. VTI has offices in Linköping, Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Lund. We are now looking for a department head for the Infrastructure Department based in Linköping. The department conducts qualified research, development, and testing in road and rail technology, operations and maintenance, as well as crash safety. The department also has a measurement laboratory and a mechanical workshop that develops, builds, and maintains the department's research equipment. The department has around 50 employees.

Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will be to lead and develop the department's activities based on VTI's mission, operational goals, and strategy, in collaboration with the department's unit managers, and to conduct research within the department's areas of activity. As a manager, you will be responsible for the department's employees, operations, finances, customer contacts, safety, data protection, and scientific quality. You will also be responsible for the long-term direction and development of new research areas related to transport infrastructure. Some of the department's current strategic development areas include new methods for data collection, processing, and analysis as a basis for maintenance planning (e.g., LIDAR and FCD as well as AI, ML, and digital twins), climate adaptation, circular construction and maintenance, and the significance of transport infrastructure for total defense. In the area of crash safety, there is also an investment in virtual crash testing.

You will also have a special responsibility for larger commitments, such as the development of new competence centers and research programs. Your task will also be to create conditions for collaboration with other departments at VTI.

As department head, you will be responsible for communication and marketing of the department's expertise and services, and represent VTI in various national and international contexts. You will report to the Director General and be part of VTI's management team.

Your Profile

You have experience in leadership and an understanding of employer issues, as well as an academic background with a PhD in a relevant technical research area for the position. You have good knowledge of and preferably personal experience in the construction, operation, and maintenance of transport infrastructure in leading positions, and have good insight into the research needs for its development in the short and long term. You should also have a broad interest in adjacent areas and applications. We value experience from applied interdisciplinary research projects, research programs, and innovation initiatives.

The role of manager within an internationally prominent research institute also requires developed national and international networks in relevant areas for the position, experience in marketing and communication, as well as business acumen and the ability to be a good representative for VTI in all contexts. You also have the ability to be a clear employer representative, build long-term and trust-building relationships within and outside VTI, and have good language skills.
